The national shift to community-based services has been overwhelmingly popular. About 82% of people who receive community-based services prefer to live at home rather than in an institution.

“For decades we have very intentionally been shifting resources away from institutional care and into the community, because that’s what people want, and it’s more cost effective.

We can serve, generally, three people in the community for every one person in an institution. And it leads to better outcomes.”

When Rob Stone finished high school in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2018, he was asked to identify three goals for his life. Stone loves art and baseball. He’s cheerful, sports a cheeky mustache, and he’s always up for an adventure. Stone has a rare genetic movement disorder, dystonia-parkinsonism, th...

At Night Owl Support Systems, we have some serious news to pass along:

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced it will no longer ensure that people with disabilities have the right to live and receive services in the community.

Embracing that people with disabilities can pursue independence and determine where they live is core to our mission at Night Owl Support Systems.

The DOJ is trying to ignore and undermine one of the most important and longstanding civil rights protections people with disabilities have:

The US Supreme Court decision (called Olmstead), recognizing the institutional isolation of people with disabilities as discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Your elected officials need to know how important this is to you.

Contact your US Senators and Representative and urge them to reject the DOJ position, defend everyone's rights as defined by the Olmstead Decision, and support legislation to make Olmstead the law of the land.

Click below to learn how to contact representatives in your area and let them know how important it is for every American to seek life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Great news in Minnesota!

We’re proud to offer throughout the state.

All-terrain track chairs are available for you!

Explore Minnesota's state parks like never before with all-terrain track chairs! These electric-powered chairs are built to handle rugged terrain that standard wheelchairs can't navigate, opening up trails and landscapes that might otherwise feel out of reach. The chairs are available to anyone—no documentation is required beyond a simple waiver at checkout. With 24 state parks now offering track chairs, more of Minnesota's natural beauty is accessible than ever before. Find a participating park and reserve a track chair at no cost.

Bonus: meet Maplewood State Park naturalist, Dora! Dora agreed to share her personal story using track chairs: "The track chair has been so helpful in my healing journey because it allows me to hear the birds, to see the wildflowers, and to just be surrounded by nature and to take time for myself. So, I encourage you, whoever you are, for whatever reason, you need a little boost on the trails, come to one of Minnesota's state parks that has a track chair available and come take it for a spin!"

Well said, American Association of People with Disabilities!

Jimothy is taking Seattle, and the world, by storm. He's the Disability Pride Month icon we didn't know we needed.

While we love the energy y'all have for this lil' disabled raccoon, we also feel the need to point out: this kind of love and acceptance is exactly what disabled people have been asking for, for far too long.

We love the love you're all showing Jimothy! Now, go do the same for disabled people.

ID: An image with a purple and pink gradient background that is vaguely space-themed, has meme-style text that highlights how iconic Jimothy the disabled raccoon is, and asks people to show disabled humans the same love they show disabled animals.

If wildfire smoke is an issue in your region, here is a way to check the air quality near you before going outside or making plans.

Be careful out there everyone!

AirNow is your one-stop source for air quality data. Our recently redesigned site highlights air quality in your local area first, while still providing air quality information at state, national, and world views.
