Happy Pride Month! For generations, many leaders in our community, such as James Baldwin, Bayard Rustin, and Marsha P. Johnson, have tirelessly advocated for the civil rights and human dignity of all of us. This month serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and the freedom to love who you love.

As Marsha P. Johnson once wisely stated, “There is no pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.”

Caucus Leadership was proud to join Kalan Haywood for his reelection campaign launch for the Wisconsin’s 16th Assembly District. First elected in 2018 at age 19—the youngest African American to hold state office in Wisconsin—he is now in his fourth term as Assembly Assistant Minority Leader. Haywood has championed property tax relief, restored local funding for Milwaukee, safeguarded union jobs, and helped secure the Milwaukee Brewers’ presence in the city through 2050. His campaign emphasizes affordable housing, accessible health care, eliminating food deserts, workforce development with family-sustaining jobs, and protecting workers’ rights, including Paid Family and Medical Leave, all aimed at building a future where every Wisconsin family has opportunity and dignity. Our Caucus Chair recently joined Chair to celebrate the reelection campaign launch of Rep. Amaad Rivera-Wagner. In his first term, Rep. Rivera-Wagner coauthored and passed AB454 to deliver workforce housing and provide low-interest financial support for working families striving for homeownership. He also coauthored and passed AB759, expanding opportunities for DACA recipients (Dreamers) to obtain professional licenses in Wisconsin, including in our schools and hospitals. Beyond legislative achievements, he has actively championed the protection of the Green Bay Conservation Corps, addressed the NEWCAP housing crisis, supported homeless veterans, and even helped secure a pardon for a local resident who now serves on the PTA of a Head Start program. When we have a democratic trifecta we need leaders like Amaad who are ready day one to deliver results. Learn more about his campaign at amaadforgb.com!
