📚 This past spring semester, University of Wisconsin–Madison students Ned Eggert and Tara McKillop spent their internships with the Office of the Dane County Board of Supervisors researching two important local priorities: youth mental health support resources and supportive housing and sustainable service financing for unhoused residents.

Both students brought passion to their work, and recently presented their findings and policy recommendations to the Dane County Board's Executive Committee.

Their internships are part of the county's ongoing partnership with UniverCity Alliance, which since 2017 has connected UW–Madison students with real-world projects that support community-identified priorities across Dane County. Each semester, students dig into priority policy topics and share recommendations directly with county leaders.

🌱 Earlier this month, members of the 2025–2026 Dane County Youth Governance Program (YGP) cohort presented their "Sustainability Safari" project to the Dane County Board!

🦁 The project centered on planning and hosting the Sustainability Safari, an interactive event at the Henry Vilas Zoo focused on raising awareness of sustainable practices including food waste reduction, composting, recycling, and more.

Established in 2012, YGP gives high school students a meaningful opportunity to engage directly in county government, serve alongside elected supervisors on standing committees, and develop the skills needed to become the next generation of community leaders. Each year, participants work together as a cohort to develop a final project that reflects their interests and priorities.

Congratulations to this year's cohort on a successful project and a great year of civic leadership!
