Have you registered for the Town’s new trash and recycling program?
It begins on July 1, but the program’s 35-gallon trash carts will be delivered to subscribers’ homes in late June. Register today so that you are all set! Also, be sure to remind family, friends and neighbors about the program.
Be sure to read the postcard that should arrive in your mailbox this week. It contains important information such as:
Only buy enough trash stickers to last you through June 30.
Check the Solid Waste & Recycling website weekly beginning in June for updates on the trash cart delivery date, annual registration sticker pickups, and leftover sticker swaps at Town Hall.
The FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), info sessions or registration help sessions are the best way to get the right information. The Solid Waste & Recycling website can be found at: https://www.townofmaynard-ma.gov/252/Solid-Waste-Recycling or by going to the Town of Maynard’s main page at https://www.townofmaynard-ma.gov, then clicking the Trash & Recycling button. Paper registration forms are located at the library, Council on Aging, and Town Hall.
Quarterly rates for the various choices.
Some common new questions we’re getting:
When will the new program start? Wednesday, July 1. Place your new trash cart, with registration sticker attached, curbside.
What if my pickup that week falls on Monday, June 29 or Tuesday, June 30? You should still put out bags with the correct number of trash stickers on them, since those are the last two days of the current bag/trash sticker program.
What happens if I don’t register for the new program by July 1? Your trash and recycling will no longer be collected by the Town. You’ll need to register to resume Town collection services or you’ll need to find a private hauler for both trash and recycling collection. All private haulers must be registered with the Town of Maynard’s Board of Health and use Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection-certified processing facilities.
Can I put out my recycling even if I’m not registered for the program? No, because recycling is not free. For that reason, residents can no longer put out a recycling cart without being subscribed to the Town’s collection program. The reasons why: Similar to trash, the collection, hauling, sorting, and processing of recyclables has costs associated with it. Recycling costs have always been a part of the Town’s overall trash and recycling budget, whether partially paid for via your trash stickers or from the taxes that we pay. With the new program, the recycling costs that have always been there are simply being made more visible, i.e., when you subscribe, you can more easily see that you are paying for both trash collection and recycling collection/hauling/processing costs.
