FREE Seizure Recognition & First Aid Training for First Responders

Harrison Fire-Rescue is proud to partner with the Epilepsy Foundation of Wisconsin to host a FREE training opportunity designed specifically for EMS providers, firefighters, law enforcement, and other first responders.

This valuable training will help responders:
✅ Recognize seizure activity and seizure disorders
✅ Differentiate seizures from other medical conditions
✅ Apply appropriate seizure first aid and patient assessment techniques
✅ Improve patient outcomes through evidence-based care

We’re proud to celebrate two members of the Gold Cross team who were recognized as 2026 Wisconsin Stars of Life! 💙

The Professional Ambulance Association of Wisconsin's Star of Life Award recognizes individuals who exemplify excellence in EMS service.

⭐ Kirk Boettcher, Fleet Manager, was recognized for the dedication and quiet leadership that help keep Gold Cross ready to respond. Kirk oversees 44 road assets, including 25 ambulances, and works closely with crews to keep vehicles safe, reliable, and operational. His behind-the-scenes work plays an important role in supporting both our teams and the patients they care for.

⭐ Riley Simons, Paramedic/FTO, was recognized for his compassion, clinical excellence, and calm demeanor in high-acuity situations. Riley has provided advanced care to some of the region’s most critically injured patients, consistently demonstrating empathy, humility, and professionalism. He also serves his community as a volunteer first responder for the Town of Freedom.

Members of our team recently attended the Professional Ambulance Association of Wisconsin's (PAAW) Midwest EMS Expo, connecting with EMS professionals from across the region, sharing ideas, and talking through the challenges and opportunities facing EMS.

We’re always glad for the chance to learn from others in EMS and bring that perspective back to the communities we serve.

Most cardiac arrests don’t happen in public. They happen at home.

That’s one reason CPR training and early action matter so much. In many cases, the first person to help is a family member, friend, or other bystander.

It started with a request for a coloring book. It turned into a pretty special afternoon.

A local homeschool family reached out because their child loves ambulances and wondered if Gold Cross had any activities we could share.

We decided to take it one step further and bring the ambulance to them.

A few other homeschool kids joined in, and before long they were climbing aboard, checking out the equipment, asking questions, and getting a closer look at what our crews do every day.

Their excitement was contagious, and our team had just as much fun sharing a little bit of the EMS world with them.

Safe to say, this was a pretty great day for everyone.

The future of EMS starts with people who feel called to serve. 💙

The Gold Cross Ambulance Scholarship helps support students pursuing a career as a paramedic while honoring the legacy of Steven E. Gerbers, a longtime Gold Cross team member who dedicated 29 years to helping people in their time of need.

Two $1,000 scholarships are available for eligible full-time paramedic students at select Wisconsin technical colleges. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5; we also consider community service, healthcare experience, and financial need.

Applications are due December 1.

Our cardiac arrest survival rates don’t happen by accident. 💙

They start with someone nearby knowing CPR. An AED being available when it’s needed. A first responder arriving and beginning care before the ambulance gets there.

Gold Cross teaches CPR to more than 6,000 people each year, supports community AED placement through the HeartStart Foundation, and works with 28 first responder groups throughout our service area.

Cardiac arrest survival really is a team effort.
