Dearest friends of the Milton House Museum,

Pray join Julie for this week’s Friday Find, where she unveils a most delightful contrivance once treasured by ladies seeking relief from the oppressive heat of summer afternoons. In an age before electric comforts, elegance and ingenuity went hand in hand, and this charming accessory offered both grace and a refreshing respite from the sweltering air.

TRANSLATION: It was hot. Not always a tree around to stand under. Need shade. But, be pretty, too.

Did you know that Abraham Lincoln threw out the first pitch at a recent Sky Carp game to kick off our annual Civil War Living History Days event?

The Sky Carp welcomed President Lincoln, and his honor guard, to the field to throw out a first pitch at their home game on May 14th. President Lincoln proceeded to take off his coat and iconic top hat, and throw in a pitch using an 1860s era ball. Afterwards, the President stood for the National Anthem, took photographs with players, fans, and mascots alike, and signed autographs! It was a fun evening for all involved!

The President, and Milton House staff and board members, had a marvelous time at the ball park, and would like to thank the Beloit Sky Carp staff for their hospitality!

As another school year comes to a close, we are reminded of the incredible young people in our community who are preparing to take their next steps into the future. Please join us in congratulating Katherine Hawley, recipient of the 2026 Joseph Goodrich Scholarship. 🎓

Established by the Milton Historical Society, this scholarship honors Joseph Goodrich, founder of Milton and the Milton House. Mr. Goodrich believed deeply in education, hard work, innovation, and most importantly, giving back to the community around you. This scholarship was created to honor students who carry on those same values through volunteerism, kindness, and community spirit.

Katherine represents those ideals beautifully, and we are proud to recognize her accomplishments and the positive impact she has already made. We wish her all the best as she begins this exciting new chapter. Congratulations, Katherine! ❤️🖤

Thank you to all the men and women who have given the last full measure of devotion to their country, that we might live in the land of the brave and the home of the free. May their memory stretching from every battlefield to patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone all across our nation, rededicate us all to the great task remaining before us.

Our gratitude will never be adequate, and we will never be able to fully repay the debt we owe them, but may we all take a moment today to remember not only their sacrifice, but the sacrifices of their loved ones.

The Milton House is honored to preserve and share the memory of Milton soldiers through conflicts from the Civil War to the present day, ensuring that their sacrifices will not be forgotten.

May you have a safe Memorial Day Weekend.

This week on the Milton House Museum's Friday Find, Julie shares a moving piece from the Milton House Museum collection: a portrait of a young World War I soldier who never made it home. Join us this Friday as we honor one life, and the countless others whose sacrifices are never forgotten.

For many years, this photograph likely hung on a family wall as a daily reminder of a son, brother, or loved one lost too soon in war. As we approach Memorial Day, we pause to remember not only those who served and died, but the families who carried their memory forward through photographs, stories, and quiet moments of remembrance.
