Lastly, we wish to introduce the 2021 UMOS HISPANIC FAMILY OF THE YEAR
HUGO & DEBBIE RIOS FAMILY

Watch their interview tomorrow the 17th, starting at 8:00 am https://fb.me/e/1ezaP8mSr

For the Rios family…family means everything.
Through the good times and the not so good times, the Rios family members remain beacons of light for each other, and for others throughout the community as well.

The Rios family sees community as their extended family, and they continue to freely give of themselves without expecting anything in return, even during the Covid-19 pandemic.

That’s the Rios way.

The Rios family has invested over 3000 hours of service to the community. ST. Anthony’s Church, The Salvation Army, Hunger Task Force, The Boys and Girls Club, Fallen Heroes, and UMOS are only a few of the organizations that have benefited from the Rios way.

Giving, and getting a smile from a child, is a worthy return on their investment of time especially during the holidays.

The Rios family truly embraces the “family is everything” concept and they show it every single day.

Deplorable conditions, working for no pay: Labor trafficking crimes a reality in Wisconsin

The following is an excerpt from a great report published by TMJ4 News Milwaukee. It features a couple stories that are too common to the Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker experience, especially foreign nationals who work under an H2-A or H2-B visa.

Our team at the UMOS - Latina Resource Center, headed by Mariana Rodriguez, provided assistance to this man and was interviewed by the I-team for this story: Follow the link for video of the interviews.

"There were times while I was working in Georgia where they would send us to the field at 6 a.m. and we were out there until 9 p.m.," he said.

"There were no lights. We were in the dark. They had orders that they had to fulfill that they were behind on. So they didn’t care how long it took. We had to be there until the orders were finished."

"There were times when we were in the field when it was very hot, in the peak of summer, and they would take a very long time to bring us water,"

"I’m not sure where they got the water from but it didn’t feel like it was sanitary. We basically drank it because it was so hot we had to have something to drink."

One of the workers on his team died after working in those conditions.

The man we spoke with said he had to get out. He joined three other workers in escaping the farm, past the armed supervisors. They were able to travel to Wisconsin, where he got in touch with the UMOS - Latina Resource Center in Milwaukee.

Mariana Rodriguez, the director of the Latina Resource Center, said they helped him find legal help and other necessities to keep his status legal in the U.S.

And there's a high demand for the workers. The U.S. Department of Labor did not make anyone available for an interview. However, they said in an email statement that specifically agricultural workers are "... critical to ensuring the nation’s food supply."

Foreign nationals who enter this country legally to work and send money back home to their relatives may become victims of illegal practices and disgraceful treatment.
