📢🫱🏾‍🫲🏽Public safety is something we build together.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve been listening to residents, neighborhood leaders, businesses, outreach workers and public safety partners about what is happening in our neighborhoods and what needs to change.

This Sunday, that conversation continues - and I hope you’ll join us.

I’ll be participating in a Community Safety Panel with Council Members Elizabeth Shaffer and Aisha Chughtai, Minneapolis Police Department’s Fifth Precinct Inspector Ryan Kelly, neighborhood leaders and the City’s Neighborhood Safety Department.

We may not agree on every solution. We don’t have to. What matters is that we keep coming back to the things we share: every neighbor deserves to feel safe, every community deserves to be heard, and government has a responsibility to turn listening into action.

📅 Sunday, Aug. 23
🚪 Doors open: 5:30 p.m.
🗣️ Panel: 6 p.m.
❓ Community Q&A: 7 p.m.
🤝 Reception: 7:30 p.m.

📍Plymouth Congregational Church - Conn Theater
1900 Nicollet Ave.
Enter through Door #3 on Nicollet Avenue.

👉🏾 Come with your questions. Come with your ideas. Come be part of the conversation.

I hope to see you Sunday. —J

Minneapolis has begun the 2027 budget process following Mayor Frey’s proposed $2.6 billion budget.

Council Vice President Jamal Osman believes the Council should focus on honest public safety budgeting, preserving effective community safety and violence prevention, protecting union workers and essential services, examining City government for responsible efficiencies, and reducing the burden on residents wherever possible.

The Council will now review the proposal, consider amendments, and hear from residents before adopting a final budget later this year.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is proposing an 11.3 percent property tax hike to help cover a budget gap. While some city programs and positions would be cut, the proposal also includes new spending for police, fire and neighborhood safety.

Sharing this update from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office regarding this morning’s tragic incident in South Minneapolis.

Our thoughts are with the family, loved ones, and all those impacted.

This morning, at approximately 10 a.m., the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit was executing a felony arrest warrant at a residence on Pleasant Ave in South Minneapolis. When deputies arrived, an adult female confirmed the subject of the warrant was inside the residence. Deputies encountered the adult male, who was armed and holding a fi***rm to his head.

Deputies attempted to negotiate with the individual. During those efforts, the individual sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency medical aid was rendered. Despite efforts, he died at the scene.

This is a traumatic incident for the family of the deceased, as well as those who witnessed it. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones.

No deputies discharged their fi***rms. To avoid a conflict of interest, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is leading the investigation. No additional information is available at this time. Questions related to the investigation should be directed to the BCA. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the individual’s identity and cause of death.

The Minneapolis City Council today confirmed Dr. Reginald Freeman as the next Chief of the Minneapolis Fire Department.

Chief Freeman brings decades of leadership in fire and emergency services, along with a strong commitment to supporting firefighters, strengthening community partnerships, and preparing departments to meet the evolving public safety needs of the communities they serve.

Council Vice President Jamal Osman voted to confirm Chief Freeman and looks forward to working with him to support firefighter wellness, recruitment and retention, emergency preparedness, and the outstanding service Minneapolis residents rely on every day.

The Office of the Council Vice President also extends its sincere appreciation to Interim Chief Melanie Rucker for her steady leadership throughout this transition, and thanks every member of the Minneapolis Fire Department for their continued dedication and professionalism while the national search for the City’s next fire chief was underway.

Congratulations, Chief Freeman, and welcome to Minneapolis. We look forward to working together in service to our residents.

📢🗳️Today, the Minneapolis City Council voted to authorize the City to apply for a federal grant to modernize the Minneapolis Police Department’s ballistic imaging technology through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN).

The proposed grant would provide approximately $300,000 to upgrade technology that helps investigators connect fi***rms used in shootings and other violent crimes across jurisdictions.

Before the vote, the Minneapolis City Attorney’s Office advised the Council that applying for this grant would NOT conflict with the City’s Separation Ordinance, would NOT require Minneapolis to participate in federal immigration enforcement, and would NOT require the City to violate local law.

👉🏾That legal guidance was reaffirmed during today’s Council meeting in response to questions from Council Members.

Council Vice President Jamal Osman voted in favor of the application based on that legal guidance and the public safety benefits of maintaining and modernizing this investigative technology.

Learn more:

Council Member Jason Chavez spoke passionately against applying for the $300,000 federal grant because of references to “criminal illegal aliens” in the government’s notice about the funding.

Listening must lead to action.

Over the past several weeks, the Council Vice President has met with residents, neighborhood organizations, Native leaders, business owners, outreach workers, and public safety partners across Ward 6 to hear directly from those experiencing the challenges facing our community.

Those conversations shaped the CVP's latest Community Safety Update.

It shares what was heard, the questions that remain, and how the City, County, neighborhood organizations, and community partners can continue working together to build safer neighborhoods while strengthening the path from crisis to recovery.

📢 This has been a difficult week for many across Ward 6.

Following recent acts of violence, our office has spent the week meeting with residents, businesses, neighborhood organizations, Minneapolis Police, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Native public safety leaders, service providers, and City and County partners.

📍From Nicollet and 19th and the streets of Stevens Square, to Southside Harm Reduction at Chicago and Franklin, All Nations Indian Church, City Hall, Ventura Village, Norway House, and Grace-Trinity Community Church in Uptown - we walked the community and heard directly from neighbors with different experiences and perspectives.

👉🏾One message was clear: people want safe neighborhoods, accountable government, stronger coordination, and meaningful action.

In the coming days, I’ll share more about what we heard, the work underway, and practical public safety resources available to residents.
