This week, MFD members attended specialized training conducted by Vehicle Response Training (VRT), which specializes in electric vehicle (EV) emergency response.

As EVs become more common on our roadways and in everyday life, MFD wants to ensure our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively to these emergencies. EV incidents are still relatively new to the fire service, making continued training and education important.

Ever wonder how much fire hose is on a fire engine?

Pictured is more than 3,600 feet of fire hose from just one Moline fire engine!

This week, the Moline Fire Department is completing its annual hose testing, which includes testing and servicing more than 25,000 feet of fire hose across the department.

We’ve once again partnered with FireCatt to complete the testing. In the past, this process took MFD personnel more than a month to complete, disrupting training and diverting crews from other duties.

With FireCatt, our apparatus remain in service, and the entire process is completed in less than two days.

Just one more way we’re working to keep our equipment ready when it’s needed.

Smoke Testing in Moline

Beginning August 31 and continuing through the first couple weeks of September, weather permitting, smoke testing will be conducted in the areas shown on the map.

This testing helps identify defects and unwanted connections in the sanitary sewer system. The smoke used is non-toxic, low-odor, leaves no residue, and does not pose a fire hazard.

Smoke may enter a home or business through defective plumbing or dried-out drain traps. If you see smoke during the scheduled testing, please keep this in mind before calling 911. If you believe there is an actual fire or emergency, call 911.

Yesterday, the Quad Cities International Airport in Moline conducted a large-scale, FAA-mandated mass-casualty emergency exercise to test our region’s preparedness and response capabilities.

The exercise simulated a commercial aircraft crash with 70 people on board, requiring fire suppression, emergency triage, patient transportation, and coordination among multiple agencies and area hospitals.

More than 50 volunteers participated as simulated victims, helping put our first responders, communication systems, transportation resources, and hospitals to the test in a realistic emergency scenario.

The exercise brought together fire and police departments from Quad Cities International Airport Public Safety Department, Moline, Rock Island, and Coal Valley, QC MetroLINK, regional medical centers, and other emergency response partners. Full-scale exercises like this are required by the FAA every three years and provide an important opportunity to practice how agencies would work together during a major aviation emergency.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this exercise a success. Training together today helps ensure our community is prepared when it matters most.

Please join us in welcoming Firefighter/EMT Welch to the Moline Fire Department!

FF/EMT Welch joins MFD with his family after serving as a Driver/Operator/EMT with .fire in Bozeman, Montana, since 2023. This fall, he will begin paramedic school while continuing his career in the fire service.

We're excited to have him on the team and look forward to the experience, dedication, and commitment he'll bring to serving the Moline community.
