Mayor's Desk: The City’s Kitty – A Story of Love
Many years ago, a little three-legged cat showed up on the steps of City Hall. He captured the heart of a mayor – and in time he would capture the heart of an entire city.
Thousands would come to know the story of “Tripod”, and to this day, he continues to be remembered as “The City’s Kitty”. His is a story of love – a story much needed in our world today, a story of kindness and compassion – reminding us that every life has value.

For years locals and tourists have come to know Tripod. His story is repeated on every carriage tour passing in front of City Hall, and Tripod’s photograph is viewed every day by countless visitors on their way to the Mayor’s Office. But, thanks to California author Janet Aguilar, children from all over the world are getting to read Tripod’s story, The City’s Kitty, a delightful children’s book inspired by Tripod’s remarkable journey.
Published by Mystic Canyon Publishing, the book shares the true story of our city’s beloved three-legged cat while teaching children timeless lessons about resilience, kindness, forgiveness, and belonging. I encourage everyone to purchase a copy for children, grandchildren, classrooms, and libraries. Every book shared helps tell the story of a little cat that during just a few years of residency at City Hall became a beloved ambassador for Natchez. Much of Tripod’s story would never have been possible were it not for former Mayor Tony Byrne, whose lifelong love of animals inspired countless acts of kindness throughout Natchez. Long before care for animals became a broader public priority, Mayor Byrne, one of our longest serving mayors (1968-1988), understood that caring for the most vulnerable among us, including our four-legged friends or three-legged ones, has everything to do with the character of a city. His legacy continues to inspire us, and Natchez owes him a tremendous debt of gratitude, not just for his love for Tripod, but for Natchez and all of our citizens. Tripod’s story has special meaning to Marla and me. Together we have enjoyed the love of many “rescues” over the years. We have lost count of the dogs and cats that have come in and out of our lives, making us better people and making our home a more loving and peaceful place. I sometimes wonder who really does the rescuing when a “rescue” becomes a member of the family!
In keeping with Tripod’s story, The City of Natchez has endeavored to do more for our “four-legged citizens”. Over the past several years, we have strengthened our commitment to protecting animals by fully staffing our Animal Control Department, providing our officers with improved vehicles and equipment, increasing their capacity to care for homeless animals, and ensuring they have the resources needed to better serve both animals and residents. We have also continued our strong financial partnership with the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society (NACHS) whose dedicated volunteers provide shelter, medical care, and loving homes for countless animals each year. These investments build upon the stronger animal wellbeing standards our city adopted several years ago, demonstrating a commitment to turning good policy into meaningful action.
Recognizing that true success requires community partnerships, the city has also, for several years now, been financially supporting two additional organizations that are making an extraordinary difference every day. Hoofbeats & Pawprints Rescue (HPR) has helped transport thousands of rescued dogs and cats across the country to communities where loving adoptive families are waiting to give countless Natchez animals a second chance at life.
Likewise, Natchez Spay Neuter continues its outstanding efforts to reduce pet overpopulation through affordable spay and neuter services. Their volunteers have prevented the birth of thousands of unwanted dogs and cats, addressing one of the root causes of animal homelessness while improving the quality of life for both pets and our community.
Government can provide leadership and resources, but these organizations succeed because of volunteers and generous donors. I encourage everyone who is able to support the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society, Hoofbeats & Pawprints Rescue, and Natchez Spay Neuter (NSN) with a financial contribution. Every donation helps save lives and strengthens the compassionate spirit that defines Natchez.
Tripod may only have had three legs, but his story stands on an enduring foundation of kindness – built by caring citizens, dedicated volunteers, and leaders like Mayor Tony Byrne, whose example continues to inspire us. I hope The City’s Kitty introduces readers across America to one remarkable cat while reminding them of something even more important: communities are judged not only by the beauty of their buildings or the richness of their history, but also by how they care for those who cannot speak for themselves.
