🌡️ HEAT ADVISORY CRAVEN COUNTY 🌡️

Craven County Animal Protective Services will be out patrolling today and checking on animals throughout the county.

Please make sure your pets have adequate shelter, plenty of fresh water, and access to shade. Animals left outside without proper protection from these extreme temperatures can quickly become distressed and suffer serious injury.

If APS finds an animal without suitable housing, water, or shade or an animal that is in distress, we will take action, including seizure when necessary, to protect the animal.

We will be stopping at multiple locations throughout the day to make sure animals are not being left in dangerous conditions.

🚨 CRAVEN COUNTY — PLEASE STOP DUMPING ANIMALS. 🚨

We have already received three calls today regarding animals being dumped. Right now, three dogs are running loose in Craven County because someone chose to dump them instead of surrendering them through the proper channels.

DUMPING AN ANIMAL IS ILLEGAL.

If you can no longer care for your pet, you need to contact the Craven-Pamlico Animal Services Center and ask about the proper surrender process. There are resources available please use them.

Dumping an animal isn't just against the law. It creates a serious public safety risk. When a dog is abandoned on the side of the road or left to fend for itself, we don't know:

• Its temperament or how it will react to people or other animals
• Whether it is vaccinated
• Whether it is sick, injured, or in pain
• Whether it may run into traffic and cause an accident
• Whether it may bite someone or another animal

And let's be honest dumping an animal can ultimately lead to that animal's death. It can be hit by a vehicle, become injured, starve, suffer from exposure, or become the victim of another animal.

If you are struggling with your pet, ask for help before you make a decision that could cost your animal its life.

If you see someone dumping an animal, report it. Do not assume someone else will handle it.

We need to do better for the animals in our community. Surrender responsibly. Don't dump.

Four days. That's how long this little kitten was stuck high up in a tree, while a very worried little girl waited and hoped her best friend would come home.

Today, thanks to the incredible kindness and generosity of Maple Springs Tree Service, this story got the happy ending everyone was praying for. They donated their time, equipment, and expertise to safely bring this little one back to the ground and back into the arms of a very relieved owner.

We can't thank Maple Springs Tree Service enough for stepping up when it mattered most. Acts of kindness like this remind us what a great community we have.

Seeing the smile on that little girl's face when she was reunited with her kitten made it all worth it. ❤️🐱🌳A huge thank you to Maple Springs Tree Service for making this reunion possible.

🚨 EXTREME HEAT WARNING FOR CRAVEN COUNTY 🚨

Dangerous temperatures are expected throughout this week. If your pets are outside, now is the time to make sure they have everything they need to stay safe. Heat-related illness can happen quickly and can be fatal.

If your pet is kept outdoors, they must have: 🐾 Fresh, clean water available at all times. 🐾 Adequate shade throughout the day—not just for part of the day. 🐾 Proper shelter that provides protection from the heat while allowing airflow. 🐾 A clean, safe environment free from hazards.

Craven County ordinances and state animal welfare laws require that animals be provided with proper food, water, shelter, and humane care. Failure to provide these basic necessities during extreme heat can result in enforcement action.

Please remember: 🚫 Do not leave pets in parked vehicles—not even for a few minutes. 🐾 Walk dogs during the early morning or late evening hours. 🔥 If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your pet's paws.

If you see an animal in distress due to the heat, don't ignore it. Report it to the appropriate authorities. A simple phone call could save a life.
