We are still getting reports of spoof scam calls. Don't fall for it! See the post for more info!
The Newark Police have been made aware of scam phone calls in which the caller ID appears to show a Newark Police Department phone number. During these calls, the caller claims the victim owes money for fines, court matters, or other legal issues and demands payment to avoid arrest.
The Newark Police Department will never request payment for anything over the phone. We will not ask you to pay fines, traffic tickets, bail, court costs, or any other fee, and we will certainly never ask for payment by gift cards, prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, mobile payment apps, or any other electronic payment method.
These calls may involve caller ID spoofing, where scammers falsify the phone number shown on caller ID to make the call appear legitimate.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up immediately. Do not provide personal information or payment. Instead, contact the Newark Police Department directly using a verified phone number.
