Traffic Alert – Closure of New London Road & West Main Street at CSX crossings

Due to a malfunction of the gate arms, both New London Road and West Main Street will be CLOSED at the CSX railroad crossings. There is no estimate on reopening the roadways at this time, but crews have been dispatched to correct the issue. Officers are on scene to redirect traffic. Please use caution and expect delays in the area.

Interns will have the opportunity to observe multiple department units, participate in ride-alongs, assist with administrative and field assignments, support records updates, and work on research projects.

Speed Camera Relocation Notice

Beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, the speed camera will be relocated to eastbound Capitol Trail between E. Cleveland Avenue and the City limits.

A 30-day warning period will begin at the new location. During this time, warnings will be issued for speeding violations. After the warning period ends, drivers who exceed the speed threshold will receive civil speeding citations by mail.

Violations issued through the automated system are civil penalties only. They do not add points to a driver’s license or impact insurance rates.

The automated enforcement program is intended to improve roadway safety by reducing excessive speeding in areas where residents and officials have expressed ongoing concerns.

Congratulations to the 2026 Citizens Police Academy on their graduation on Thursday night.

Over the past 10 weeks, class members took an inside look at the many functions of the Newark Police Department and learned more about how our officers, dispatchers, and civilian staff work each day in partnership with the community. The program gave participants the opportunity to meet department personnel, engage with subject-matter experts, and gain a better understanding of the training, decision-making, and teamwork involved in serving Newark.

The Citizens Police Academy continues to be an important part of strengthening relationships between the police department and the community we serve. We are grateful to this year’s graduates for their time, interest, and commitment to learning more about public safety in Newark.

We also extend our sincere thanks to Friends of Fusion Foundation for their partnership and support, and to Klondike Kate's Restaurant & Saloon for catering several of the class events and helping make the experience even more welcoming for our participants.

For their final class, the 2026 Citizens Police Academy students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from several of the Newark Police Department’s federal law enforcement partners.

Representatives from the FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation , the ATF , and the U.S. Marshals spoke with the class about the missions of their agencies, their individual roles, and how their agencies work in partnership with the Newark Police Department.

Later in the evening, students received instruction on technology used by police officers in the field, including body-worn cameras, in-car camera systems, and other tools that assist officers and investigators in solving crimes and improving public safety.

The class concluded with a presentation by a representative from Axon, who discussed features used by the Newark Police Department, including analytics, real-time trend monitoring, and other tools that support modern policing.

The final class provided students with a broader understanding of how local, federal, and private-sector partners work together to support the Newark Police Department’s mission and enhance public safety in the community.
