As National Water Safety Month comes to a close, we’re highlighting our ongoing efforts to help Rhode Islanders stay safe in and around the water. 🌊

Since launching the Water Safety Grant Program in 2024, DEM has awarded over $150,000 in grants to support swim lessons and paddlecraft safety classes across the state — funding nearly 9,000 lessons and helping more than 1,700 children and teens gain lifesaving water safety skills.

We’ve also installed 17 life rings at state parks and beaches across Rhode Island to provide emergency flotation equipment at popular waterfront locations.

As summer begins, remember:

✔️ Wear a life jacket when boating
✔️ Always supervise children near water
✔️ Respect the water and know your limits
✔️ Learn water safety skills

If you’re visiting East Beach in Charlestown this season, you’ll notice the landscape around the sand trail looks very different. That’s because DEM and Save The Bay - Narragansett Bay are working on a habitat restoration project at Ninigret Barrier Beach.

As part of this effort, non-native Japanese Black Pines have been removed to strengthen coastal resilience, improve wildlife habitat, and help protect the shoreline. While the appearance of East Beach may feel unfamiliar at first, this work is designed to restore the barrier beach to a healthier, more resilient natural state.

Initial restoration is nearly complete, with ongoing invasive plant treatments continuing through 2027. Vehicles permitted to use the sand trail must stay within designated areas.

The project is funded through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's America the Beautiful program.

🏖️ Memorial Day weekend kicks off the 2026 beach season in the Ocean State, with state beaches open daily with lifeguards, beach staff, concessions, and restrooms at most locations starting Saturday, May 23.

🚧 Roger Wheeler State Beach will be open but with limited capacity, as construction on the boardwalk and bulkhead project wraps up. Restrooms will be available, and lifeguards will be on duty to help support a safe and enjoyable experience for all beachgoers.

To improve traffic flow and get visitors parked and onto the beach more efficiently, DEM has implemented a new traffic pattern at Misquamicut State Beach. Please follow all new directional signage and traffic guidance when entering the area.

Be safe this summer: respect water conditions, know your limits, and listen to safety announcements! Find more beach safety tips at www.riparks.ri.gov/beachsafety

➡️ Plan ahead – buy your state beach season parking passes online at www.beachparkingri.com

📌 DEM offices will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day and will reopen Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

🏗️ Heads up, C**t State Park visitors! Construction on a new 11,600-square-foot visitors center and operations facility is underway.

The facility will provide vehicle storage, offices, and workshop space for DEM Parks and Recreation and Law Enforcement staff, plus a public reception area to support C**t State Park and nearby state park facilities. The project is expected to be completed by late 2027.

🚧 What to expect:
· Park and bike path access will remain open during construction
· Traffic and safety measures will be in place to minimize disruption

The $12M project is funded through the voter-approved 2024 Green Bond.

📢 Burlingame State Campground Update:

While we hoped to welcome campers back to Burlingame State Campground in time for Memorial Day Weekend, construction delays with the new restroom facilities have pushed back the opening date.

The good news: the old, out-of-date restrooms are being replaced with shiny new facilities designed to make your camping experience cleaner, comfier, and far more enjoyable. We’re just not quite there yet.

DEM knows this is disappointing for campers eager to kick off the season and truly appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding while these upgrades are completed. We will provide an update as soon as we can and expect more information to be available by early June.

Please visit www.riparks.ri.gov/burlingame-construction for more information.

🚲 Good news! The section of the East Bay Bike Path from Kettle Point Avenue to the service road in East Providence has reopened.

The temporary closure was put in place to allow the City of East Providence to carry out repairs on a break in a pipe within the city’s wastewater collection system, located near the bike path.

Thank you for your patience during the closure. Any remaining repair work will take place outside of the paved bike path area.

📢 Whistles up! State lifeguard certification tests start this weekend.

Candidates should register for a testing timeslot and hold current certifications in lifeguard training, first aid, and CPR (infant, child, and adult).

🏖️ Looking to work at a RI State beach this summer? Lifeguards' pay ranges from $19.75 - $21/hour. We also offer a $500 sign-on bonus for lifeguards hired by May 22 and an additional $500 retention bonus for eligible staff who remain through the end of the season.

Spend the summer protecting beachgoers, building leadership skills, and working with a great team at Rhode Island’s state beaches and parks.
