Water by the numbers . . . last night's brief downpour between 3:29 AM and 4:09 AM dropped .17 inches of rain that caused street flooding in several areas, prompting the North Wildwood Police Department to send a Code Red message for street flooding at 3:58 AM. The highest rate of rainfall was .78 inches/hour at 3:44 AM. Another brief period of rain occurred between 6:24 and 6:44 AM, dropping an additional 0.10 inches of rain. Total rainfall overnight was 0.27 inches.

Here is what we can expect today . . . Yesterday we had a couple of close calls where it appeared that heavy rain was heading our way and by the time to got to our area it went above us or dissipated. Frequently check the weather radar. A good website for weather radar is https://radar.weather.gov/. When you zoom in and click on the map, you also get the alerts in the area. By clicking the play arrow, the map continuously updates.

⚠️⛈️ Scattered thunderstorms are forecast to develop across the region again today and tonight. The exact timing and coverage of any severe storms is uncertain, as it will be conditional on how the stable surface air evolves. Storms could linger well into the night. Cooler today, but remaining humid. Stay weather aware!

Here is what we can expect today . . . To get a better sense of timing, you need to check the forecast for North Wildwood, which is (as of this post):
Today (Tuesday) - Mostly sunny, with a high near 87. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
Tonight (Tuesday) - A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 3am. Some of the storms could be severe and produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Keep an eye on the weather for Tuesday through Thursday, as several weather outlets are forecasting potential severe weather for our area. We could get Severe Thunderstorms, with damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes possible. The US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly weather forecast for our area doesn't look that bad; however, with the heat and humidity, we could get one of those pop-up thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening that could cause considerable damage from rain and wind. Sort of like the unexpected rain this morning, when between 4:30 and 5:00 AM a heavy downpour only dropped .38 inches of rain, but the rainfall rate at 4:44 AM was 1.87 inches per hour. How many people had open windows? Monitor the weather forecasts and, in particular, frequently check the weather radar to see where the storms are popping up.

Looking at the Weather Alerts on Thursday, most of the severe weather, including waterspouts, hail, and rainfall rates, is obtained from Doppler Radar observations. You can help the US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly by providing local observations directly to them. It may save lives and will help to ensure accurate forecasts for current weather and help provide better forecasts going forward.

With Thursday's rain behind us, the next rainfall should be on Saturday. Checking the forecast, the chance of precipitation is down slightly. Here is the current forecast:

Saturday - Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 3pm, then showers likely, possibly with a thunderstorm after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday Night - Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Sunday - A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Southwest wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday Night - A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Water by the numbers... Before going into the rainfall numbers lets review the weather alerts that we received leading up to the storms. We often mention that most weather events, we get some sort of early warning. The alerts started hours before the storms, at 2:33 PM when a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for our area from 2:32 PM to 10PM and at 3:00 PM a Tornado Watch was issued for our area from 3:00 PM to 10 PM. A watch means conditions may be favorable for the outbreak of Severe Thunderstorms or Tornadoes.

At 3:26 PM, a Marine Warning was issued for Cape May County until 5:00 PM – Thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts were over the Delaware Bay off Cumberland and Northwest Cape May Counties

At 4:42 PM, a Flash Flood Warning was issued for Northwest Cape May County until 8:45 PM

At 5:13 PM, a Marine Warning was issued for Delaware Bay and the Coastal waters of Cape May County until 6:45 PM for Severe Thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts

At 5:14 PM, a Marine Warning was issued for the coastal waters from the Cape May County border to Beach Haven (Ocean County) until 6:45 PM for Severe Thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts

At 6:15 PM, a Marine Warning was issued for the upper area of Delaware Bay until 7:15 PM for a Tornado in Dover, Delaware heading towards the Delaware Bay.

At 6:30 PM, a Marine Warning was issued for Lower Delaware Bay and Coastal waters off Cape May County until 8:00 PM for Severe Thunderstorms producing waterspouts

At 6:38 PM, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Cape May County until 7:15 PM for severe thunderstorms in Cumberland County heading towards Cape May County.

At 7:08 PM, a Tornado Warning was issued for Cape May County until 7:30 PM for a radar-indicated waterspout off of North Cape May / Cape May heading East. The National Weather Service initiated a Wireless Emergency Alert for the Tornado Warning, where all Cell phones in Cape May County went off with an emergency tone and message. Due to the location of the waterspout, a decision not to sound the tornado siren was made.

At 7:11 PM, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Cape May County until 8PM.

At 7:24 PM, the rain started with heavy rain, wind, and lightning. The rain ended at 8:24 PM with some drizzling until 10PM. The highest rainfall rate was 2.84 inches/hour at 7:39 PM, and the rainfall total was just less than an inch at 0.96 inches

At 8:11 PM, the National Weather Service canceled the Tornado Watch issued at 3PM

Something to pay attention to. According to various weather outlets, we could get some high winds and heavy rain late this afternoon and again on Saturday. Follow local forecasts and periodically check the weather radar to see when we will get the rain and winds.

Just something to be aware of when making plans for Thursday.

Today will be quiet, but showers and thunderstorms will move in on Thursday. Storms will be capable of producing heavy downpours and flash flooding with rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour. This could result in road closures and travel disruptions for the evening commute.
