Philadelphia Energy Authority

Philadelphia Energy Authority PEA drives clean energy solutions that decrease bills, increase future-proof jobs, and build what’s next. Energy that moves Philadelphia forward.

In 2010, Council President Darrell Clarke and Mayor Michael Nutter launched the Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) as an independent municipal authority. City Council established the Philadelphia Energy Authority to provide targeted expertise and focus to Philadelphia’s efforts to reduce energy consumption and expense. Under its founding ordinance, PEA is authorized to facilitate and develop energy efficiency and energy generation projects on behalf of the City of Philadelphia. PEA will fulfill its role by

1. Identifying, supporting and facilitating the most cost effective and environmentally-sound opportunities for the City of Philadelphia to reduce energy use and expense;

2. Promoting and assisting the development of alternative sources of energy, benefiting the retention and development of a local workforce which is essential for the economic prosperity of the City; and,

3. Educating Philadelphia’s consumers (including residential, commercial and public sector audiences) regarding choices available in the energy marketplace.

🎒 Welcome back, Philly students! As a new school year gets underway, we’re celebrating another milestone in the School District of Philadelphia's ongoing effort to improve facility energy efficiency, lower operating costs, and address deferred maintenance.

PEA has been proud to support the School District as an objective technical resource throughout procurement and implementation phases for projects such as NORESCO's recently completed GESA-3 improvements. These projects are creating more comfortable learning environments across School District buildings, reducing energy use while bringing sustainability into the classroom: https://www.noresco.com/2026.06.22_SDP.html

Throughout the Philadelphia Energy Campaign, PEA and the School District have partnered to invest more than $276 million in energy efficiency and other critical capital improvements across 23 schools, benefiting more than 15,000 students. This is energy that moves Philadelphia forward.

Congrats to the start of a new school year! 🏫⚡📚

This month, we're recognizing the determination, dedication and of our Green Residential Construction Immersive Training (GRIT) program graduates.

As we celebrate this year's eighth GRIT cohort, we’re proud to reflect on what this program makes possible:
🔩 Hands-on building trade skills
🚧 Construction safety certifications
💼 Career readiness support to enter the workforce with confidence

Through GRIT, participants gain more than technical skills — they gain pathways to meaningful careers in the green building and construction industries, opening doors to new opportunities and long-term economic mobility.

Congratulations to our graduates, and many thanks to Councilmembers Isaiah Thomas and Jim Harrity, our partners and course instructors at Energy Coordinating Agency (ECA), and our wrap-around service providers and career readiness instructors at Phase3 Training and PVTC Philly for helping make this program possible.

Here’s to the next chapter for our GRIT graduates!
