"The Calaveras Sheriff’s Office this morning posted the arrest of a Valley Springs man along with a list of several fire-related charges.

The arrest was near where the Gann Fire was first reported to have ignited, which has burned approximately 9,363 acres of vegetation. It has forced the evacuation of 1,473 residents while placing an additional 1,400 under evacuation warnings, according to the governor’s office.

65-year-old Hervert Wayne Smith was arrested for three offenses. Smith was booked into Calaveras County Jail on charges that include a felony for causing a fire of a structure/forest land and two misdemeanors for operating machinery without clearance and allowing fire to escape/spread. Smith has been released on bond."

The Calaveras Sheriff's Office posted the arrest this morning with a list of several fire-related charges.

Due to the Gann Fire, hard road closures are currently in effect at the following locations:
🚧 Pool Station Road at Cement Plant Road
🚧 State Route 4 at Pool Station Road
🚧 Hogan Dam Road at Gann Road
🚧 Hogan Dam Road at Hunt Road
If you have a Ranch Pass issued through the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, you must present your Ranch Pass and a valid photo ID at the hard closures for verification.
🔥 Fire Safety Reminder 🔥
Wildfire conditions can change rapidly. Please help keep yourself and your family safe by being prepared before you travel.
Keep these emergency items in your vehicle:
✅ Drinking water
✅ Non-perishable snacks
✅ Cell phone charger or power bank
✅ Flashlight with extra batteries
✅ First aid kit
✅ Prescription medications
✅ Emergency blanket
✅ Important documents or copies
✅ Full tank of fuel whenever possible
Please avoid the affected area, follow directions from law enforcement and fire personnel, and never drive around barricades or road closure signs.
Stay informed through official updates and monitor local emergency notifications.
