Hate does not happen in isolation, and neither can our response.

Racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Blackness, anti-Asian hate, and anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination are connected. When one community is targeted, we all have a responsibility to stand together.

The only thing that changes hate is how we choose to respond: with courage, solidarity, and action.

My opening comments as I chair the Select Committee on Racism, Hate and Xenophobia.

“An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”

Hate never stops with a single community. It spreads when we stay silent and weakens us all. The work of confronting racism, hate, and xenophobia demands solidarity, not only when our own communities are under attack, but whenever any community is. That’s how we protect each other. That’s how we protect democracy.

Visited the California African American Museum and met with its executive leadership to discuss their priorities and the work of preserving Black history as living truth. Grateful for the conversation and the shared commitment to ensuring our stories are protected, remembered, and passed on.

As we reflect on 250 years of the American experiment, we are reminded that democracy is not a finished product, it is a responsibility passed from one generation to the next.

The lessons of our history challenge us to ask: Are we merely consumers of democracy, or are we active guardians committed to protecting its promise?

Our democracy depends on participation, accountability, and the courage to engage even when the work is difficult. The future of our communities and our country will be shaped by those willing to show up, speak up, and help build a more inclusive and equitable democracy.

A powerful reflection on the role each of us plays in carrying this experiment forward.
