Today is Patriot Day and the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. America will never forget the events that occurred on September 11, 2001.

We remember and honor the victims who died in the twin towers, at the Pentagon, and those on the four flights hijacked by terrorists.

We remember and honor the memory of the firefighters, peace officers, paramedics, and members of the community who risked or lost their lives saving others.

We remember and salute the bravery and fortitude of the American people whose character was tested yet never wavered.

With just hours left to pass laws, we’re being handed a major wildfire proposal that could have real consequences for utility bills, home insurance rates, and wildfire victims. Californians deserve to know what this proposal does, what it will cost, and who will ultimately pay.

I’ve raised concerns before about major policy being pushed through at the last minute without public input. I am committed to working with the next administration to craft financially sound solutions and double down on wildfire mitigation and prevention efforts.

Team Niello joined the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce in celebrating the Placer Breast Cancer Foundation sponsorship of its first UC Davis Health mobile mammography event. The clinic was fully booked and offered free breast cancer screenings to uninsured members of our community. There are two additional events already planned later this year.

Congratulations to the Placer Breast Cancer Foundation on more than 20 years of service and thank you for continuing to make healthcare more accessible for those who need it most!

Congratulations, Ms. Maria Rugama. She is the Sacramento County Teacher of the Year!

The Galt Joint Union High School District is pleased to announce that last night at the Sacramento County Office of Education Teacher of the Year Banquet and Awards Ceremony, our very own teacher, Ms. Maria Rugama, was awarded the top honor of Sacramento County Teacher of the Year!

Ms. Rugama is an English Language Arts/English Language Development teacher at Galt High School.

In her own words, when asked why she teaches, Ms. Rugama said, "I strive to be a compassionate, caring teacher. I strive to be a teacher who provides opportunities. I strive to be a lifelong learner. I hope my actions prove to my students where I stand in supporting them. Always."

We congratulate Ms. Rugama for this momentous award and look forward to celebrating her as she represents the county over the next year.

We extend our congratulations to the Center Joint Unified School District for their teacher, Ms. Mary Linden, who also received this award!

When students arrive on campus needing significant remediation in math, writing, and literacy, we owe it to them to ask whether the system is setting them up for success.

Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh and I are calling on the UC Regents to reinstate the SAT or ACT as an objective measure that can help identify academic preparedness and ensure students have the foundation they need to succeed at the University of California.
