Donald Trump should not determine fair mortgage lending laws in California, and with a stroke of his pen, Governor Newsom can deliver an alternative: AB 801. This bill is a necessary antidote to increased federal inaction on redlining and other discriminatory lending practices, which have historically blocked Black and brown Californians from generational wealth-building.

Across California, the growing number of abandoned recreational vehicles is creating significant public health, safety, and environmental hazards in our communities. Local governments haven’t had the resources or authority they need to properly address this. AB 1153, the Funding Clean Streets Act, gives them the tools to tackle this growing issue to protect our communities, improve public safety, and ensure clean, accessible streets for everyone.

Protecting patient safety, keeping our professional workforce engaged, and preserving the integrity of health care requires that we not rely exclusively on AI to do things quicker and cheaper. My role as a legislator is to be a voice for the beautiful people of Oakland, Alameda, and Emeryville, particularly for the most vulnerable among us, who have too often been overlooked and neglected by our political system. So when the Trump administration attempts to bring millions of tons of coal to California, the voices of my constituents are front and center in how we must respond.

In passing AB 40 today, we said no to coal. We said no to Trump. We said no to continuing the harmful impacts of environmental racism.

No matter where in California Trump tries to send his coal, our communities deserve an accurate and complete picture of the environmental impact that such a project would bring.

I hope Governor Newsom will sign this bill as an opportunity to extend California’s legacy of standing up to Trump and the fossil fuel industry.
