This week, AB 2134, the Family-Friendly City Councils Act, is officially on the Governor’s desk!

AB 2134 ensures that city councilmembers who take parental leave cannot lose their seat simply because they’re absent for more than eight weeks. It helps remove barriers that have too often discouraged new parents, especially mothers, from serving in local government. I’m proud to champion legislation that makes public service more accessible and more reflective of the families we serve.

In divisive times, solidarity matters. At a time when families across California and the nation are facing uncertainty due to immigration enforcement, we have a responsibility to speak out.

My experience as an educator shaped how I view immigration, especially during President Trump’s first term, when I witnessed the fear and uncertainty that made its way into our classrooms. I helped coordinate programs and resources to support students and immigrant families as they navigated that uncertainty. Families were afraid, and children worried whether their loved ones would be there to pick them up at the end of the school day.

As a community, we hold a responsibility of protecting our communities and fostering, strong, and safer communities for all. That’s why I applaud my friends and colleagues in Monterey County for taking a leadership role in building a broad multi-jurisdictional coalition to oppose the proposed ICE detention facility in Gilroy.

Partnerships like this send a clear and strong message that our communities are not for sale, and we stand united in support of all Californians.

Always a pleasure coming back to Big Sur Multi-Agency Advisory Council (BSMAAC) and sharing space with my federal, state, and county colleagues. In the past day alone, an ex-girlfriend of Graham Platner has revealed disturbing allegations of sexual assault and the courts have ruled that President Trump sought to defame and intimidate one of his victims, E. Jean Caroll. This unending pattern of sexual abuse in politics needs to stop. The efforts to strip survivors of their voices and rights must end today.
