History was made today! 🎉🎉🎉

With Governor Newsom’s signature on AB 1923, Fresno County reached a victory that belongs to the people, earned by the thousands of residents who stood up, stayed engaged, and never stopped believing their voices mattered.

I was proud to be your partner and grateful to stand alongside Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria and everyone who helped make this day possible.

Take a moment to reflect on what we accomplished together. This is a chapter in our community’s history that will never be forgotten.

AB 1923 passed in both the Senate and Assembly and is on Governor Gavin Newsom's desk for consideration.

This is a victory for the people of Fresno County and for our democratic process because it honors a simple principle: the voices of the people matter. I became involved because it was the right thing to do, and I believe public service means protecting the public’s right to be heard. I am grateful to Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria, my colleagues in the Legislature, and the local elected leaders, labor partners, community organizations, and residents who stood with us yesterday in support of this effort. Together, we have helped ensure the people of Fresno County have the opportunity to make this important decision for themselves.

AB 1923 passed the Senate Elections Committee today.

Thank you to the Committee members for taking the time to ask thoughtful questions, understand the unique circumstances before us, and recognize why this extraordinary process is necessary. Thank you to Senate leadership for standing with the people of Fresno County and their right to decide the future of Better Roads, Safer Streets.

I am especially proud of everyone who showed up today. Mayors, city council members, labor leaders, grassroots organizations, mothers, students, and community advocates stood together with one message: let the people vote.

More than 32,000 residents did their part. AB 1923 simply gives Fresno County voters the opportunity to have the final say.

Yesterday, I had the honor of recognizing two exceptional students from Mendota High School on the Senate Floor.

Jonathan Alfaro Saravia and Christopher Torres-Alfaro earned first place at the MESA National Engineering Design Competition at Johns Hopkins University for developing Safe Space, a multilingual crisis response system that provides anonymous, real time mental health support for students.

Their success shows what is possible when talent is matched with opportunity. Congratulations to Jonathan and Christopher, their teachers, Eloy Peña and Carlos Tamayo, and the MESA program for this incredible achievement.

You have made Mendota, the Central Valley, and all of California proud.
