🏫 SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION! 🚌

As students across our community head back to school, the Ste. Genevieve Police Department would like to remind everyone to slow down, stay alert, and use extra caution while traveling throughout the city.

Please be especially mindful of posted speed limits in and around our school zones. With students walking, biking, getting on and off buses, and increased traffic during drop-off and pickup times, a few extra seconds of patience can make a big difference.

🚔 Drivers should also expect increased speed enforcement throughout the city, particularly around our schools, before and after school hours.

Please remember:

• Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
• Watch closely for students at crosswalks and intersections.
• Be prepared for school buses making frequent stops.
• Put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.
• Give yourself a few extra minutes during morning and afternoon school traffic.

Let’s work together to make sure everyone has a safe and successful start to the new school year!

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

The Ste. Genevieve Police Department would like to warn citizens about an ongoing phone scam.

Scammers are calling residents and falsely claiming they have outstanding warrants for their arrest. The caller then demands immediate payment to avoid being arrested, fined, or taken into custody.

These calls are scams.

Please remember:
• Law enforcement agencies will never call you demanding payment to avoid arrest.
• We will never request payment using gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps.
• Do not provide personal or financial information to anyone over the phone if you are unsure of their identity.

If you receive one of these calls:
✅ Hang up immediately.
✅ Do not send money or provide personal information.
✅ Report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.

If you are ever unsure whether a warrant exists or have questions about a suspicious call, contact the Ste. Genevieve Police Department directly using our official, publicly listed phone number.

🌧️ With multiple rounds of rain expected, we want to remind everyone to stay off the roads if at all possible.

Standing water can be extremely difficult to see, especially at night or during heavy rainfall. Just a small amount of moving water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or sweep it off the roadway.

If you must travel:

* Slow down and allow extra time.
* Never drive through flooded roadways.
* Turn around if you encounter water covering the road—it’s impossible to know how deep it is or whether the roadway underneath has been damaged.

Your destination can wait. Please make safety your priority and help keep our first responders safe by staying home until conditions improve whenever possible.

The Ste. Genevieve Police Department joins in mourning the loss of retired Police K-9 Mario, who passed away today.

Mario faithfully served the citizens of Ste. Genevieve for more than six years, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, courage, and unwavering loyalty. During his distinguished career, Mario was instrumental in numerous narcotics investigations, assisted in the seizure of thousands of dollars connected to illegal drug activity, and helped apprehend criminal suspects who threatened the safety of our community.

Among his many accomplishments, Mario played a critical role in locating and apprehending a suspect responsible for multiple armed robberies, the theft of a firearm, and the theft of a vehicle. He also successfully tracked and located two missing children, including a five-year-old autistic child, helping bring them safely home to their families.

Beyond his law enforcement duties, Mario was a beloved ambassador for the department. Through school visits, K-9 demonstrations, and community events, he touched the lives of countless children and adults throughout Ste. Genevieve. His presence brought smiles, created lasting memories, and strengthened the bond between law enforcement and the community we proudly serve.

While Mario’s badge may have been retired, his impact never was. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable accomplishments as a police service dog, but also for the loyalty, companionship, and friendship he provided to those who knew and worked alongside him.

We extend our deepest condolences to his handler, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Thank you for your service, Mario. Your watch is over, faithful partner.

The Ste. Genevieve Police Department would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Protecting K-9 Heroes for their generous donation of a K9 medical trauma kit for K9 Keno.

This specialized equipment provides our handlers with critical medical supplies that can be used in emergency situations to help protect and care for our four-legged partners while they are serving our community.

K9s willingly put themselves in harm’s way alongside their handlers, and resources like this trauma kit help ensure they have the best possible chance of receiving lifesaving care when every second counts.

Thank you, Protecting K-9 Heroes, for your continued support of law enforcement K9 teams across the country. Your generosity helps keep K9 Keno safe and ready to serve the citizens of Ste. Genevieve.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

During the late evening hours of May 26, 2026, a Ste. Genevieve Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop that resulted in the arrest of Melvin Bardo on multiple drug-related charges.

During the investigation, officers discovered suspected fentanyl and suspected methamphetamine.

As a result of the traffic stop and subsequent investigation at the county jail, Bardo was arrested and charged with:

• Trafficking a Controlled Substance
• Introduction of a Controlled Substance into a County Jail
• Possession of a Controlled Substance

This arrest highlights the important role proactive traffic enforcement plays in identifying criminal activity and keeping dangerous drugs out of our community. The Ste. Genevieve Police Department remains committed to protecting the citizens of Ste. Genevieve through diligent patrol and enforcement efforts.

All persons named are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
