Oregon OSHA is sharing the work of Oregon Young Employee Safety (O[yes]) Coalition 2026 media contest finalists. The media contest puts a spotlight on the importance of young workers’ safety and health, with a focus this year on staying safe in the heat. The competition challenged high school students across Oregon to create compelling videos or graphic designs that inspire young workers to take the Oregon OSHA heat illness prevention online course at https://osha.oregon.gov/edu/courses/Pages/heat-illness-prevention-online-course.aspx.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the 18th annual Blue Mountain Occupational Safety & Health Conference, June 16-17, in Pendleton.

The event featured a variety of workshops designed to help employers and workers improve on-the-job safety and health, including sessions available in Spanish. Topics included farm machinery safety, prevention of heat illness, personal protective equipment, identifying hazards, safety committees, emergency preparedness, and much more.

More than 246 participants attended the conference representing agriculture, construction, food processing, wood products manufacturing, and other industries. The exhibits featured 19 different organizations with relevant products and services for workplace safety and health.

The conference is a collaborative effort by Oregon OSHA, Safety and Health Advocates Recommending Progress (SHARP) Alliance, and employers and employees in northeast Oregon.

You will learn about identifying types of workplace hazards, correcting hazards, developing an inspection checklist for the walk-around inspection, and writing an effective safety inspection report. This class builds on the hazard identification and hazard control modules that are included in Oregon OSHA’s introductory class Safety Meetings and Committees.

☀️🌡️ A medida que aumentan las temperaturas, se incrementa el riesgo de enfermedades relacionadas con el calor en el lugar de trabajo. Oregon OSHA le recuerda a todos los empleadores que deben proteger a los trabajadores de los peligros potenciales del calor intenso.

☀️🌡️ As temperatures rise, the risk of heat illness in the workplace increases. Oregon OSHA reminds employers to protect workers from the potential dangers of high heat.

Under Oregon OSHA’s heat illness prevention rule, employers must provide adequate water, rest, shade, gradual adaptation to working in the heat, communication and training, and emergency plans. The rule applies across industries whenever an employee is working, and the heat index equals or exceeds 80 degrees Fahrenheit. More protections apply when the heat index exceeds 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Oregon OSHA also maintains heat illness prevention requirements for employer-provided housing, including on farms.
