A major milestone for FrontRunner 2X!

The Federal Highway Administration (FTA) has advanced FrontRunner 2X to the Engineering phase of its Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program, bringing the project one step closer to securing nearly $1.3 billion in federal funding.

A partnership between Utah DOT and Utah Transit Authority, FrontRunner 2X will add 26.1 miles of double track, a new station, 10 trainsets, and a new maintenance facility. Once complete, it will provide 15-minute peak service and 30-minute all-day service — creating more reliable transit and expanding transportation choices across the Wasatch Front.

FrontRunner 2X builds on decades of thoughtful regional planning. Communities across the Wasatch Front have planned for growth around FrontRunner stations through Station Area Plans, transit-oriented development, and the Wasatch Choice Vision. This investment will strengthen an already robust regional transportation system while helping communities make the most of existing infrastructure and support future housing and job growth.

This milestone is made possible due to collaboration among local communities, UDOT, UTA, WFRC, and MAG - Mountainland Association of Governments. We are grateful to the U.S. Department of Transportation and Utah's congressional delegation for their partnership and shared commitment to Utah’s future.

In a recent Deseret News opinion piece, WFRC Chair Mayor Dawn Ramsey shares why federal transit funding programs should recognize the needs of communities that are growing quickly and planning for the future. Her piece highlights the recently proposed PATH Act by Congressman Burgess Owens and Senator John Curtis, which would allow Utah to better compete for federal transportation funds.

“Transportation projects do not happen overnight. They take years of planning, coordination, and prioritized investment. Local communities do their part, and the state may dedicate resources, but major projects, particularly transit projects, often depend on a partnership with the federal government.”

As the Wasatch Front continues to grow, thoughtful transportation investments will be essential to supporting mobility, economic opportunity, and quality of life for generations to come.

We're grateful to Senator John Curtis, Congressman Burgess Owens, and Rep. Mike Kennedy for championing legislation that recognizes the value of preparing for tomorrow's transportation needs today.

The introduction of the bipartisan Promoting Access to Transit in High-Growth Communities (PATH) Act recognizes the importance of planning for future growth—not just today's population and ridership. The legislation would give fast-growing regions like the Wasatch Front a greater opportunity to compete for federal transit funding.

For decades, Utah has taken a proactive approach to growth—bringing together local governments, UDOT, UTA, the private sector, and community partners to plan transportation, housing, and land use as one connected system.

Our planning efforts—from Utah's Unified Transportation Plan and Station Area Planning to the Wasatch Choice Vision—have helped demonstrate that planning ahead creates stronger communities.

How should transportation funding be invested across the Wasatch Front over the next six years?

The Draft 2027–2032 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is now available for public review, and we want to hear from you! Developed through close collaboration with Utah DOT, Utah Transit Authority, and local communities, the Draft TIP identifies priority transportation projects that have undergone thorough technical evaluations and are programmed with funding over the next six years.

Explore projects and submit comments online through August 2 at wfrc.utah.gov/tip-comment.

WFRC was pleased to join the Utah Transit Authority, the Utah DOT, MAG - Mountainland Association of Governments, and other Utah transit and transportation partners for Transit Day on the Hill.

This event is an opportunity to engage with legislators, share the importance of continued investment in transit, and recognize the strong partnership between state leaders, transportation agencies, and local communities that helps keep Utah moving.

As Utah continues to grow and prepares to welcome the world for the 2034 Winter Olympics, conversations like these help ensure our transportation system is ready to meet future mobility needs.

Connecting, learning, and collaborating in Tulsa!

WFRC Council Chair Mayor Dawn Ramsey, Council Vice Chair Commissioner Bob Stevenson, Executive Director Andrew Gruber, and Deputy Director Ted Knowlton joined regional leaders from across the country at the 60th Annual Conference of the National Association of Regional Councils (NARC).

Participants from around the nation shared ideas and innovative approaches to tackling regional issues, including transportation, economic development, and housing, today and into the future.

During the conference, Mayor Ramsey moderated a discussion on innovative local funding strategies for regional planning, while Commissioner Stevenson co-chaired NARC's Transportation Committee meeting focused on federal transportation policy and advocacy.

We're grateful for the opportunity to learn from our peers and bring new perspectives back to the Wasatch Region as we continue planning for the future.
