The Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) is an association of governments comprised of elected officials from Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Morgan, Box Elder, and Tooele counties. Our region is among the fastest growing areas in the United States. The way we grow will largely determine the quality of life for generations to come. Through the WFRC, local governments and community members from Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Morgan, Box Elder, and Tooele counties come together to plan for our future. The Wasatch Choice 2050 is the region's "vision" for growth and development. The adopted 2015 - 2040 Regional Transportation Plan will serve the region's transportation needs over the next 25 years.

We’re feeling invigorated after joining transportation and planning professionals from across the country at the 2026 Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) Annual Conference in Sacramento, California!

The conference brought together MPOs to share ideas, learn from one another, and explore the challenges and opportunities in regions across the country.

We’re especially proud to celebrate Miranda Jones Cox — WFRC’s Government Affairs Manager — who received an AMPO Rising Professional Award! 🎉 This recognition highlights the contributions of emerging professionals in the MPO community, and we’re excited to see Miranda representing WFRC and contributing to the field.

As Utah continues to grow, improving transportation connectivity is more important than ever.

Street connectivity means having a network of streets with direct, convenient connections that help people more easily reach their destinations. WFRC partnered with Utah’s other metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), Utah DOT, and Utah Transit Authority to develop the Statewide MPOs Regional Roadway Grid Study, a statewide, data-driven look at where missing connections and physical barriers may be limiting how our transportation networks function.

🔎 More than 350 improvement concepts were evaluated using measures of access, connectivity, and multimodal network completeness.

The result? A practical resource that communities can use to:
• Explore potential transportation connections and improvements
• Inform General Plans and Transportation Master Plans
• Identify future transportation investments
• Support connectivity planning requirements established by S.B. 195

The study’s maps, data, and recommendations give local governments and transportation professionals ideas to explore as they plan for Utah’s future.

WFRC was happy to host Senator John Curtis and his team for a roundtable discussion and site visit to the North Temple FrontRunner Station with local development partners, municipal leaders, and Utah DOT & Utah Transit Authority to highlight the important connection between transportation investment, housing, and transit-oriented development.

We discussed two pieces of legislation Senator Curtis has sponsored that would benefit Utah and other fast-growing regions.

The PATH Act, also sponsored by Rep. Burgess Owens and Rep. Mike Kennedy, would help fast-growing areas that are planning for transit to better compete for the federal Capital Investment Grant (CIG) transit program.

The BUILD Hubs Act would enhance the ability of the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) program to support housing and transit-oriented development.

We also highlighted Senator Curtis’s effectiveness in helping UDOT and UTA advance the FrontRunner 2X project into the engineering phase of the CIG program — a crucial milestone toward $1.3 billion in federal funding for the project.

Thank you, Senator Curtis, for your leadership and continued work to advance transportation infrastructure, mobility, and quality of life for Utah’s future!

WFRC staff had a great time at the 2026 Utah Bike Summit, connecting with partners and leaders from across Utah who are working to make biking safer, more accessible, and a bigger part of how our communities get around.

WFRC Chief Planner & Deputy Director Ted Knowlton moderated the keynote, and WFRC staff also participated in the day’s sessions and conversations.

Creating safe, connected options for walking and biking is an important part of planning for growing communities and building transportation systems that work for everyone.

A major milestone for FrontRunner 2X!

The Federal Highway Administration (FTA) has advanced FrontRunner 2X to the Engineering phase of its Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program, bringing the project one step closer to securing nearly $1.3 billion in federal funding.

A partnership between Utah DOT and Utah Transit Authority, FrontRunner 2X will add 26.1 miles of double track, a new station, 10 trainsets, and a new maintenance facility. Once complete, it will provide 15-minute peak service and 30-minute all-day service — creating more reliable transit and expanding transportation choices across the Wasatch Front.

FrontRunner 2X builds on decades of thoughtful regional planning. Communities across the Wasatch Front have planned for growth around FrontRunner stations through Station Area Plans, transit-oriented development, and the Wasatch Choice Vision. This investment will strengthen an already robust regional transportation system while helping communities make the most of existing infrastructure and support future housing and job growth.

This milestone is made possible due to collaboration among local communities, UDOT, UTA, WFRC, and MAG - Mountainland Association of Governments. We are grateful to the U.S. Department of Transportation and Utah's congressional delegation for their partnership and shared commitment to Utah’s future.
