Some moments are bigger than an award.
Today, East Central ISD had the privilege of surprising Superintendent Roland Toscano as he was named the 2026 ESC-20 Superintendent of the Year.
The honor recognizes the top superintendent among the school districts served by Education Service Center Region 20, which serves more than 500,000 students across South Central Texas, and advances Mr. Toscano to consideration in the Texas Superintendent of the Year program, one of the highest recognitions for educational leadership in the state.
Region 20 representatives were in attendance to present the honor. They were joined by the people who mean the most to Toscano—his family, friends, colleagues, Board Members and East Central ISD staff who have walked alongside him throughout his journey. What followed was a celebration filled with gratitude, pride, laughter, and tears.
For Mr. Toscano, East Central ISD is more than a workplace. It is home.
He grew up here. He graduated from East Central High School in 1991. He began his career in our district in 1997 as a teacher and coach. He served as an assistant principal, principal, and, since 2014, superintendent. For nearly three decades, he has dedicated his life to serving the students, staff, and families of East Central ISD.
His story reflects the very values he champions every day: hard work, humility, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in people.
Under his leadership, East Central ISD has experienced extraordinary growth and achievement while remaining grounded in a commitment to students and community. Through every challenge and every success, he has led with empathy, vision, and a deep love for the district that helped shape him.
Perhaps the most meaningful part of the day wasn't the award itself. It was seeing his family, colleagues, and young grandchildren rush forward to celebrate a man whose life's work has been dedicated to others.
Congratulations, Mr. Toscano, on this well-deserved recognition. Thank you for your leadership, your heart, and your unwavering commitment to East Central ISD.
This honor belongs not only to you, but to the community you have proudly served for a lifetime.
