You spoke. We listened.

After receiving valuable feedback through our first ThoughtExchange, the community Naming Committee reconvened to review the results and discuss additional possibilities for ECISD's new high school opening in Fall 2028.

The committee retained the two most-supported names from the original ThoughtExchange and added five new options for consideration. Now it's time to hear from our families and community once again.

Visit www.ecisd.net/namethenewhighschool to participate in the new ThoughtExchange and help shape the legacy of ECISD's newest high school.

Some moments are bigger than an award.

Today, East Central ISD had the privilege of surprising Superintendent Roland Toscano as he was named the 2026 ESC-20 Superintendent of the Year.

The honor recognizes the top superintendent among the school districts served by Education Service Center Region 20, which serves more than 500,000 students across South Central Texas, and advances Mr. Toscano to consideration in the Texas Superintendent of the Year program, one of the highest recognitions for educational leadership in the state.

Region 20 representatives were in attendance to present the honor. They were joined by the people who mean the most to Toscano—his family, friends, colleagues, Board Members and East Central ISD staff who have walked alongside him throughout his journey. What followed was a celebration filled with gratitude, pride, laughter, and tears.

For Mr. Toscano, East Central ISD is more than a workplace. It is home.

He grew up here. He graduated from East Central High School in 1991. He began his career in our district in 1997 as a teacher and coach. He served as an assistant principal, principal, and, since 2014, superintendent. For nearly three decades, he has dedicated his life to serving the students, staff, and families of East Central ISD.

His story reflects the very values he champions every day: hard work, humility, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in people.

Under his leadership, East Central ISD has experienced extraordinary growth and achievement while remaining grounded in a commitment to students and community. Through every challenge and every success, he has led with empathy, vision, and a deep love for the district that helped shape him.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of the day wasn't the award itself. It was seeing his family, colleagues, and young grandchildren rush forward to celebrate a man whose life's work has been dedicated to others.

Congratulations, Mr. Toscano, on this well-deserved recognition. Thank you for your leadership, your heart, and your unwavering commitment to East Central ISD.

This honor belongs not only to you, but to the community you have proudly served for a lifetime.

Giving back doesn't take a summer break.

A special thank you to Scarlett Herrera, an East Central High School freshman, for volunteering her time this summer to support the Sinclair Elementary Food Bank distribution. Her willingness to serve others is a great example of what it means to Lead the EC Way.

Thank you, Scarlett, for making a difference in our community.

East Central ISD remembers and honors two individuals whose dedication, leadership, and unwavering support helped shape our district and community for generations.

We are saddened by the passing of John Barry "Barry" Stevens and James Denis Bartleson.

Barry Stevens was a proud East Central High School graduate, longtime East Central ISD Board Trustee, and dedicated supporter of the East Central School Foundation. Through decades of service, he helped strengthen opportunities for students and contributed to the continued growth of our district.

Denis Bartleson was one of East Central's most passionate advocates. He served as PTA president, supported countless booster club efforts, helped lead the East Central Citizens Forum, and was a tireless champion of East Central athletics. His commitment to our schools and community was recognized through the naming of Bartleson Field at East Central High School.

Both men devoted much of their lives to supporting East Central ISD and the students, families, and staff who make this community special. Their legacies will continue to inspire future generations.

Our heartfelt condolences are with the Stevens and Bartleson families.

🐝 Coaches Spotlight 🐝

Our Hornet Softball Coach Welham 🥎

1. What was one of your best accomplishments in your sports career

Transferring to the Univeristy of Tennessee At Chattanooga from Incarnate Word College to play Division 1 softball.

2. Something memorable that happened in your coaching career

Reaching the State Tournament last year was a tremendous career goal and one of the highlights of my coaching journey. However, our 2023 five-round playoff run, where we defeated four district champions along the way, was an incredible achievement that will forever hold a special place in my heart. The resilience, determination, and belief that team displayed made it a truly unforgettable experience.

3. How long have you been coaching?

Coach Welham began her high school coaching career in Judson Independent School District before continuing her coaching journey at Alamo Heights Independent School District. She just finished her 6th year as the Head Coach here at East Central. Her passion for the game started long before her coaching career, as she spent ten years coaching travel softball alongside her father and family after concluding her own travel ball career with the San Antonio Illusions.

4. What’s something you want to accomplish with the softball program in the next few years?

ECSB is working to win the UIL 6A Division 1 State Title, be awarded a Beyond the Game honor & banner and to be the highest ranked team to receive the Grant Teaff Award.
