Students at Hirsch Elementary, Ogden Elementary and Tafolla Middle School are enjoying a new incentive this year – biweekly shopping at the campuses’ Habits of Success Stores.

Students earn currency to shop by exhibiting the habits comprising the Third Future Schools’ seven core values including: being at school on time, being respectful of others, taking responsibility for their actions, persevering, striving for accuracy, doing their best and engaging positively with those around them.

Three district schools operating as resource campuses in the state's Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) initiative are watching student outcomes increasing in real time. The initiative places highly skilled teachers with students who need them and adds learning time to quickly move campus outcomes. At Poe Middle School (pictured above), Crockett Academy and Hot Wells Middle School, students and teachers were learning Sept. 18, one of 11 extra days in their academic calendar this year. Educators at Poe agree the model is changing the students' outlook as they raise their expectations of themselves. "Students are talking about their academics and about how they're doing on the tests and how they're growing,” principal Justin Watwood said. “They're just much more bought in because that's the culture of all the classrooms in the school. It's early in the year, and it's going to keep getting even better.”

Tres escuelas del distrito operan como centros de recursos en la iniciativa estatal Impulsando la Excelencia en el Campus (ACE, por sus siglas en inglés) están observando cómo mejoran los resultados de los estudiantes en tiempo real. The Beat the Heat program won the Educate Texas TXCAN Pitch Competition, earning $5,000 to continue increasing college enrollment through transportation and enrollment support.

A partnership of the Department of Postsecondary Initiatives and the SAISD Foundation, the program provides young alumni bus transportation and on-site registration assistance at local colleges and universities. The Foundation’s Postsecondary Navigators guide the graduates through the process of college enrollment and help retrieve missing paperwork. The program’s recent trips helped 321 members of the Class of 2026 register for classes, contributing to the district’s 57% rate of postsecondary enrollment, a number that’s rising in SAISD as it declines nationwide at peer districts.

El programa «Beat the Heat» ganó el concurso «TXCAN Pitch Competition» de Educate Texas, con lo que obtuvo 5,000 dólares para seguir aumentando la matriculación universitaria proporcionando transporte y apoyo para matricularse.

Este programa, fruto de la colaboración entre el Departamento de Iniciativas de Educación Superior y la Fundación SAISD, ofrece a los jóvenes exalumnos transporte en autobús y ayuda en persona con la matriculación en las universidades y centros de enseñanza superior locales. Six weeks into the school year, athletes at Tafolla Middle School are well into their girls basketball and boys soccer seasons. The school, which operates in partnership with Third Future Schools, offers athletics and new electives including folklorico, flamenco and cosmetology.

“It’s good that they let us have electives,” Azalee Elizondo said. “A lot of charter schools don’t have electives and sports, so it’s good that we still get to experience sports even though we are a charter school.”

The eighth grade girls basketball team are off to a strong start under coach Andrea Loza.

“Coach loves us,” said Ariana Aguirre. “She is a really good coach. If we don’t get something, she’ll demonstrate it and explain it. We have good sportsmanship. We always encourage each other and are all really good friends.”

Tras seis semanas de clases, los deportistas de la secundaria Tafolla Middle School están sumergidos en sus respectivas temporadas de baloncesto femenino y fútbol masculino. La escuela, que opera en asociación con Third Future Schools, ofrece deportes y nuevas materias optativas, como danza folclórica, flamenco y cosmetología.

«Es bueno que nos permitan tener materias optativas», dijo Azalee Elizondo. «Muchas escuelas chárter no ofrecen materias optativas ni deportes, así que es bueno que todavía podamos participar en deportes a pesar de que somos una escuela chárter».

By looking closely at shapes, colors, sizes, and textures, the young learners are practicing how to classify items, spot patterns, and explain their mathematical thinking. Building these critical thinking and problem-solving skills laying a strong foundation for future math success. Good job, Gators.

How much does it weigh? Kindergarteners at Woodlawn Hills Elementary tipped the scales with common classroom objects, exploring the concept of weight through hands-on learning, observations and comparison, while demonstrating the International Baccalaureate learner profile. Students practiced being inquirers by asking questions, thinkers by making connections, and communicators by sharing their ideas with classmates. Great job!

¿Cuánto pesa?
