Sonoma County Public Infrastructure is recruiting for a Deputy Director of Transportation & Operations who oversees the day-to-day functions of several operational divisions, including integrated waste services, transit, airport operations, water systems, and fleet operations.

🚧 Road Work Update 🚧
Crews are staying busy across Sonoma County this week with seasonal crossing installations, road repairs, and routine maintenance.

Work continues on the Asti and Vacation Beach seasonal crossings. As noted in last week's update, the Vacation Beach crossing installation timeline depends on site conditions and water levels.
Crews will continue working as conditions allow.

Elsewhere, crews are:
- Improving road surfaces on Geysers Road by adding and compacting new material on unpaved sections
- Performing grader patching on roads including Valley Ford Road, Estero Lane, Walker Road, and Hardin Lane to smooth rough areas and improve driving conditions
- Repairing potholes at various locations
- Replacing culverts in Bloomfield to improve drainage and help protect roadways during storms
- Repairing guardrails and maintaining traffic signs and pavement markings throughout the county
- Mowing roadside vegetation along Neeley Road, Ross Road, and Drake Road to improve visibility and roadway safety

Over the weekend, crews responded to a downed stop sign at Skillman Lane and Liberty Road.

While many of us are looking for shade, Sonoma County road crews are out in the heat repairing roads, installing crossings, replacing drainage structures, and maintaining critical infrastructure. Their work helps keep residents, businesses, school buses, and emergency responders moving safely throughout the county.

Thank you to our road crews for their continued hard work keeping roads safe and passable. Please slow down, stay alert, and give crews plenty of room to work.

🚧 Old Cazadero Road Slide Repair Update – PM 14.26
Construction continues on Old Cazadero Road as crews make progress on roadway stabilization improvements.

This week, crews completed a major concrete placement that will help support the new retaining structure being built to stabilize the hillside and protect the roadway.

🚧 Pine Flat Road Culvert Replacement Update – PM 11.50
Construction continues on the Pine Flat Road Culvert Replacement Project.

This week, crews excavated the site in preparation for installing a concrete headwall at the inlet of the new drainage culvert. A headwall is a reinforced concrete structure that helps protect the culvert opening, improve drainage flow, and reduce erosion around the roadway.

The attached photos show excavation work underway as crews prepare for the next phase of construction.

⚠️ Traffic Reminder:
One-way traffic control remains in effect during construction. Please follow posted signs, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for brief delays when traveling through the project area.

🚧 Vacation Beach Crossing Update 🚧
Crews have successfully set the bridge deck and have been working to construct the temporary roadway approaches to the Vacation Beach crossing.

Due to unexpected site conditions, the crossing will not open as planned today, June 19. A section of wet soil needs additional time to dry and stabilize before work can continue safely.

Current conditions suggest the area may be ready for construction as early as next week. County crews will continue to monitor the site closely and will provide updates as conditions improve and a revised opening date becomes available.

🚧 Watmaugh Road Bridge Replacement Update
Early construction preparation is underway for the Watmaugh Road Bridge Replacement Project.

This week, crews completed survey staking, which helps mark exact construction locations, along with required biological surveys for protected species as part of the project’s environmental permits. Crews also completed minor clearing to prepare the area for upcoming work.

As a reminder, Watmaugh Road Bridge is scheduled to close to all through traffic since June 15, 2026, with a posted detour route in place.

🚧 Stewarts Point Skaggs Springs Road Slide Repair Update
A major milestone was reached this week on the slide repair project at PM 19.67.

After completing roadway excavation and placing Class II aggregate base—the compacted rock foundation beneath the pavement—crews paved the roadway yesterday. This marks a significant step toward restoring the roadway following the slide repair work.

The attached timelapse, drone photos, and video, courtesy of Michael Clark with BKF Engineers, capture the paving operation and provide a unique aerial view of the progress being made on the project.

🌉 Freestone Flat Road Bridge Replacement Project Update
Construction continues on the Freestone Flat Road Bridge Replacement Project, with crews making progress on the new bridge while the existing bridge remains open to traffic.

This week, crews are drilling and installing Cast-In-Drilled-Hole (CIDH) piles, which are deep concrete foundations that will support the new bridge abutments—the structures at each end of the bridge that connect the roadway to the bridge itself. Work is also underway to form, reinforce, and pour the concrete abutments that will support the new bridge.

Maintaining access for the community remains a priority, and motorists can continue using the existing bridge as a detour route throughout construction.

The project will replace the existing bridge with a new, wider structure designed to meet current standards.
