Introducing our next newest Board Members…Serena Lienau! ✨

Serena Lienau serves as the Administrative Services Officer for the Planning and Economic Development Department (PED) for the City of Santa Rosa. She has been with the City of Santa Rosa since 2000 and has worked for Recreation and Parks, the City Manager’s Office, and the Office of Community Engagement, before transitioning to PED in 2018. Serena worked with the City’s Violence Prevention Partnership for most of her career, managing the Measure O CHOICE Grant Program along with developing and implementing various violence prevention strategic initiatives for the City and local, state, and national partners. Throughout her career, she has led and participated in a variety of projects and initiatives and has served for the past eight years in leadership roles for the City’s Emergency Operations Center Planning and Intelligence Unit. Serena values connection with others, personal and professional development, and opportunities for process improvements.

Serena has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and a minor in Women & Gendered Studies, and a Master of Arts Degree in Organization Development from Sonoma State University, where she also served as an instructor for three years. She’s also currently working towards her certification as an iPEC Professional Core Energy Coach. Serena has served on several local non-profit and government boards and committees, has developed and delivered many leadership development training courses, and currently serves on the steering committee for the Metro Chamber’s Leadership Santa Rosa program.

Serena grew up moving around as a Navy kid and ultimately made Santa Rosa her home in 1999. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two boys (and their copious number of sports), along with yoga, hiking, reading, and traveling.

We are incredibly excited to have Serena’s passion shine on our Board. Please join us in welcoming her to the Community Matters Family! 💙

Today’s Kindness tip is about being curious, this time in online spaces. Today, when you are on your phone or your laptop and you see a post, ask yourself - who is behind the screen? It’s easier to say hurtful things to someone when you don’t see them face-to-face. It’s extra easy if your identity is anonymous online. But remember there are real people behind those screens and the posts that you see. Remember, online is IRL. We’ll be back tomorrow for our final Kindness tip of the week.

Be Courageous! Courage starts with you. When you notice hurtful words or actions, don’t stay silent - speak up. Whether online or in person, your voice can interrupt mistreatment and make a difference.

Welcome back to Kindness Week 1! We’re coming at you with another Kindness tip of the day. Today, we’re focusing again on being curious by learning how to notice when a classmate might need some extra support. Ask yourself, Has this person been acting differently lately? Do they seem lonely? Being curious means paying attention to changes in words and behavior. If these changes are unusual or concerning, they could be a sign that your classmate needs help. Stay tuned next week for more Kindness tips.
