It's back to school season, and it's more important than ever to make sure the youth in your life understands the importance of being in a healthy relationship, whether that be with a romantic partner or a friend.

By asking them simple and easy yet thought-provoking questions to alleviate any heaviness that can be brought on by conversations like this, asking what they consider to be a healthy relationship and how they know they're feeling respected in a relationship, amongst other important questions can help shape their future in an incredibly positive way.

YWCA NENY is committed to creating a safer and healthier world for all. Our Teen & Youth Programs help students work on building confidence and self-esteem, learn the signs of healthy vs unhealthy relationships, have discussions around mental health challenges, work on finding their voice, and promote self-discovery and expression.

SHOUT-OUT TO OUR AMAZING ADVOCACY TEAM!

"Shout out to the YWCA NorthEastern NY for having advocates for DV survivors within the family court, child protective services, and inside the police station. Life changing and life saving."

Today, we're celebrating our wonderful, compassionate and dedicated Advocacy team.

Informed by our 137-year history and by the expertise of our nationwide network, YWCA is carrying on its long tradition of social action and advocacy to advance our mission.

Our team helps our community members with family court, as police department advocates, and child protective services. They stand up, show up and give their all to helping make sure that those we serve are protected throughout some of the most difficult chapters of their lives.

Thank you so much for all you do and pushing our mission forward in everything you do. We appreciate you all so much!

Back to school season is here, and it is important that we have conversations with the young people in our lives to show what a healthy relationship is and isn't.

Parents and caregivers play an incredibly important role in the lives of their young children. By showing young people the importance of honesty, respect and equity in romantic relationships, it can lead to them making healthy and responsible decisions in relationships and for their own safety, health and wellness.

While this can be considered a "heavy" topic, you don't have to dive right in to that heaviness. Ask them questions about school and their interests to get the discussion started. Conversation starters such as "how do you choose a friend?" or "do you think people in relationships should be equal?" as well as "how do you know you can trust someone?" and "what is the meanest thing someone can do to you?" can help start a productive discussion about what it means to be in a healthy relationship. The earlier you discuss these things with the youth around you, the healthier their relationships will be in the future. It is up to the adults in their lives to be their model for what successful relationships and healthy interactions will be like in the future.

YWCA NENY has a dedicated Teen & Youth Violence Prevention program, designed to create safe spaces for the youth in our community. The programs help students work on building confidence and self-esteem, learn the signs of healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, have discussions around mental health challenges, work on finding their voice, and promote self-discovery and expression.

BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS MONTH SPOTLIGHT: KHA & MEL'S COFFE + TEA ROOM

Kha & Mel's Coffee + Tea Room is the brick-and-mortar realization and expansion of what co-owners Khalid Miller and Jamel Mosely built through their cold brew coffee business, Upstate's Cold Brew. With Upstate's Cold Brew, Kha and Mel created a loyal following through pop-ups, farmers' markets, wholesale accounts, and direct-to-customer sales across the country.

Kha & Mel's expands on that foundation, creating a physical space where the relationships, hospitality, and community that shaped Upstate’s Cold Brew can live every day. They're currently open seven days a week, with doors opening at 7 AM.

They have special lattes, refreshers, teas, and bakery items that are introduced every few weeks, along with exciting programming like their weekly DJ feature, Lunch Breaks on Thursdays from 12:00pm - 1:00pm.

Come and visit Kha & Mel's Coffee + Tea Room inside of the Love Albany Center!
