Arthur makes a huge difference in the parks and is exactly what you want to see on the TEAM.

Meet Art Poort
Art Poort, 64, discovered pickleball when the Heckart Community Center opened in March 2022. “I played racquetball for years but when the racquetball courts closed I joined the HCC and picked up pickle ball. In addition to racquetball, Art is a former corn hole champion and won the 2021 Sedalia Central MO Corn Hole league.
“When it is wet outside I’m inside playing pickle ball.” Art owns Poort Excavating, so the weather dictates when he is available to play his new sport. Art shared that he will soon retire and will be able to play whenever he wants.
“When I started playing pickleball, I borrowed the Community Center’s equipment but soon bought my own racquet. I really enjoy playing the game, meeting new friends and improving my health. “My breathing and eye and hand coordination has improved.” His friends says his game has improved a lot as well. Another regular player, Tom, who usually plays against Art, added, “Art is an awesome player. We played together today and won!”
Players come to the HCC to play pickleball from surrounding towns such as Warsaw, K**b Noster and Marshall. According to Dan VanDyne, a regular player at HCC, there can be as many as 30 players in an afternoon. “I’d like to see the sport grow here,” adds Dan. A couple of tournaments have been organized this past year and plans are underway to offer more tournaments.
We look forward to seeing Art on a more regular basis as soon as he retires.

He really helped us from having to close Liberty pool this weekend due to a maintenance issue. Along with two of our staff who dropped everything, giving up their plans to be sure the pool was open and ready to go for adult swim!
SEDALIA!!! I have worked for other communities but SEDALIA is SPECIAL…I am always amazed and continuously surprised with the dedication and support to go above and beyond from local companies and citizens to keep this community going and going strong. There is way more good in this community and sometimes I think we forget that, today I was clearly reminded!!

ISSA Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach, Isaac Spilker, has been on staff at the Heckart Community Center since day one. “I love it so much. This is truly a dream job, working with people in this wonderful environment.” Isaac is currently working with ten individuals, Monday through Friday in the HCC Fitness Center. “Working here has exceeded my expectations. It’s been a safe place to get experience and I’ve become comfortable working with everyone.”
For the past 16 weeks, Isaac has been training with an online coach in preparation for the August Midwest Natural Championship. This will be a national qualifier and includes men’s and women’s bodybuilding and physique. The competition will take place at the Ameristar in St. Charles. This will be his first time in a competition. “I’ve learned the natural way to train, including my diet.” He will have a small army of supporters cheering him on, including his wife, parents, grandparents and friends.
We are all cheering for Isaac and wish him the best as he competes later this month.
