At this morning’s Scott County Board meeting, Public Health Director Lisa Brodsky rose during the interested citizens portion of the agenda to address the Commissioners as well as the public about “a profound tragedy” that affected the community through the killing of Khalid Ibrahim Abdi on May 27. Choking back tears, Brodsky extolled the late Abdi, “a young husband, an expectant father, an emerging community leader, and the son of Ibrahim Mohammed,” a deeply respected and trusted member of Scott County’s Muslim community. “The impact of violence extends far beyond this single moment,” she continued. “Incidents like this reverberate outward through families, neighborhoods, schools, faith communities, and first responders… that reach far beyond those directly involved. It is important that we acknowledge both the human loss and the broader impact that violence has on our community wellbeing... may we honor his memory by supporting one another and continuing to support the sense of safety, belonging, and connection that defines our community.” Photo courtesy of AFSCME Council 5.

It’s National Dairy Month!
Did you know dairy foods are a key part of the food packages provided by the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program? Foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt can help women and children meet their needs of essential nutrients like calcium, protein, and vitamin D to support bone health and development. Take a look at our brochure for more info about how WIC supports families in meeting their nutrition goals:https://www.health.state.mn.us/docs/people/wic/outreach/worksspanish.pdf

At yesterday’s Minnesota Association of County Social Service Administrators (MACSSA) conference, Scott County’s own HHS Director Barb Dahl was presented with the MACSSA Human Services award “… for exemplary leadership in the delivery of human services to the people of Minnesota.” Dahl is highly regarded both inside and outside of Scott County for, in the words of County Administrator Lezlie Vermillion, “[She] is the state’s best county representative on multiple task forces” in addition to her advocacy with an array of legislative initiatives to streamline and modernize the delivery of social services. Congratulations, Barb – and well deserved!

Another day, another celebration! On Wednesday, May 27, elected officials, CDA leadership and staff, and community members joined together to formally cut the ribbon on one of the three Community Land Trust properties in Shakopee (two are largely completed; the third is expected to be ready in June). CDA created the Scott County Community Land Trust to help put homeownership within reach for lower to moderate income households. (For more information on this program, visit https://scottcda.org/resource/community-land-trust/.) Scott County was pleased to be part of this program through the allocation of federal ARPA dollars and providing county-owned land for these properties. Several other Community Land Trust properties are expected to open over the next few years. Congratulations!

We’re proud to celebrate the recognition given to the Scott County Integrated Health Center from the Minnesota Hospital Association for its innovative, collaborative approach to expanding mental health and addiction services in our community. This partnership among Allina Health, St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Open Door, and Scott County has created an entirely new continuum of outpatient care—services that were not previously available within the County. Together, we’re increasing access, reducing crisis visits, and bringing essential, community-centered care closer to home. Congratulations!
