Most high school music programs teach students how to read notes on a page. We teach them how to command a stage.

When we first set out to build a rock-based music program, there was no standard curriculum to pull from. As Matt Heritage, our music director noted, the success of this initiative relied entirely on whether the youth would step up to the challenge.

They didn't just step up, they amplified it.

Instead of traditional classroom recitals, our high school arts program is designed to mirror the real industry. Our student musicians aren't just practicing in a vacuum; they are forming their own bands, mastering their instruments, and preparing to enter the Spokane music scene as capable, confident artists. They are learning the profound discipline it takes to perform live, and the intense teamwork required to keep a band together.

Now, it's time to turn up the volume. On Wednesday, June 10th, we are hosting our 1st annual outdoor Art Exhibition & Music Festival. This is a massive, public celebration of project-based learning, featuring live sets from our very own student-led bands: No Recollection, Flourish, and Hot British Rats.

There is a massive difference between reading about economics in a textbook and actually building a local marketplace from the ground up.

On June 5th, our Class of 2027 is doing exactly that. They aren't just hosting a high school fundraiser; they're managing the Summer Kickoff, a massive Spokane vendor market that brings our local economy directly to our campus.

At Innovation High School, we believe the best way to teach youth leadership and project management is to hand students the reins. A high school diploma is a milestone. A professional network is a lifeline.

In Spokane, it's easy to get caught up in the narratives about what our city lacks. But if you look closely at the Spokane arts community, you will find an incredibly tight-knit ecosystem of creators, photographers, musicians, and local business owners who actively and fiercely support one another.

As our Director of Fashion, Ronnie Ryno, points out, this city is built on mutual support and cross-promotion. When we call on Spokane small businesses and local professionals to help guide our youth, they don't hesitate. They jump right in.

Because of this profound community partnership, our students aren't just completing assignments in a vacuum. The local community literally becomes their professional network. A spark of imagination is a beautiful starting point. But it takes profound mentorship to engineer that spark into a fully realized concept.

At Innovation High School, you can learn so much from our classroom settings. Just listen to our Director of Fashion, Ronnie Ryno. With 27 years of teaching experience, she understands that young creators don't just need a sewing machine, they need the dedicated space and trust to build something entirely their own.

Within our high school fashion design department, the main studio space is reserved for our Osiris students: dedicated juniors and seniors who have completed their foundational courses and are actively designing their own original clothing collections.

When these students showcase their work at our 8th Annual Fashion Show this coming Friday, they aren't just turning in a final project. As Ronnie beautifully points out, they are experiencing the incredibly gratifying moment of realizing just how amazing their own capabilities are.

Ninth grade isn't just another step up; it is the single most critical transition in a young adult's educational career.

In many Spokane high schools, incoming freshmen are dropped into a massive, fast-paced system and expected to instantly know how to manage their time, advocate for themselves, and navigate the pressure. But expecting a 14-year-old to just "figure it out" on their own is exactly how brilliant, capable youth quietly slip through the cracks.

That is why we fundamentally changed the model with our 9th Grade Success program.

Instead of waiting for a student to fail before offering student support, we actively teach our high school freshmen how to succeed. We treat the transition itself as part of the curriculum. In our alternative education ecosystem, our freshmen are given the dedicated time and intentional mentorship to learn how to ask for help, how to bounce back from a mistake, and how to take total ownership of their own learning.

When you give a student a safe, solid foundation in their freshman year, they don't spend the next three years playing catch-up. They spend them discovering exactly who they want to be.

We cannot build an ecosystem for students if we don't also build it for our educators.

In traditional high school education, teachers are often handed a rigid script and told to perform. But when you ask one of our incredible teachers what makes this environment different, his answer is simple: "I have the ability to adjust and do what I need to do to best help my students."

As a public charter high school, we don't believe in micromanaging our educators. We know that true student-centered learning requires flexibility. We trust our teachers to read the room, adapt their lessons, and show up as their authentic selves. Because, when a teacher feels fully supported by their administration, they have the bandwidth to ensure every single student in their classroom feels seen and supported, too.

Are you excited about where your child is going to high school next year?

It's a simple question, but for many Spokane parents exploring high school enrollment options, the honest answer is a quiet "no." On June 5th, the Class of 2027 is taking total ownership of their upcoming senior year expenses by hosting the Summer Kickoff: A massive, community-driven Spokane vendor market. We know that senior year can come with quiet financial anxiety.
