The rain is behind us—at least for this week! ☀️ We’re looking forward to dry days, mostly sunny skies, and just the occasional cloud. Well earned after all that August rain!

But even on the rainiest days, there was a little magic to be found. Sometimes, the rain brought rainbows! 🌈

Check out this stunning photo our staff member Kelly captured a couple of weeks ago. And look closely… it seems the rainbow ends right at the library!

What are your favorite treasures to find at the library? A new book or vintage classic? A favorite children’s story time? A crafty adult program or invigorating exercise class? Maybe it’s a community meet-up, a museum pass, a great graphic novel, or a quiet study room.

Whatever your library treasure may be, we’d love to hear about it!

🌸 In memory of Dolly Parton, join us for a FREE weekday matinee right after the holiday.

We can’t mention the title because of licensing… but we think you can guess this one.

Set in a small Louisiana town, this beloved comedy-drama brings together a beauty salon, lifelong friendships, plenty of laughter, and a few tears. It also features one of Dolly’s most memorable movie roles.

As we remember Dolly and the joy she brought to so many through her music, acting, generosity, and unmistakable spirit, we invite you to spend an afternoon enjoying one of her unforgettable performances.

Tuesday, September 8 | 2–4 PM
Community Room, Hughes Library
Doors open at 1:30 PM

Rated PG
Closed captions/English subtitles

Please note: This program was previously advertised with a different date. The correct date is September 8!

Bring a friend and join us as we pay tribute to Dolly with an afternoon of laughter, friendship, and a little Southern charm.

It may be September, but we’re still stuck on August’s fabulous programs!

Many thanks to the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners, Monroe County and Marion Barnes for leading Art in the Garden: A Guided Watercolor Workshop a couple of weeks ago!

Participants learned the basics of watercolor painting and created their own paintings inspired by Pennsylvania native plants. They even got to enjoy our newly renovated library patio while they painted! It did get a little too hot, though, so thankfully we were able to move indoors.

We loved spending the afternoon learning, creating, and enjoying the garden together.

And there’s more to come! The Master Gardeners will be back at the library in October for workshops on pawpaws and garlic.

📚🎉 30 Years in Our Home — 110 Years of Library Service! 🎉📚

Today marks 30 years in the building we call home, but the story of library service in Monroe County goes back much further.

📖 1916: Library service in Monroe County began, in one form or another, more than a century ago.

🏗️ Summer 1994: A location was chosen for a new library on Route 611 in Stroudsburg, the former Stroud’s Jewelers and Distributors building.

❤️ November 1994: The new library was announced as Hughes Library, named in honor of R. Dale Hughes and his family. Mr. Hughes and the Hughes Foundation contributed a remarkable $1 million toward the project.

📅 August 31, 1996: Eastern Monroe Public Library opened its new main library, with the first floor completed and ready to serve the community.

And today, 30 years later, Hughes Library continues to be a place where people come to read, learn, discover, create, and connect. 📚💻❤️

From the earliest days of library service in Monroe County to the library we know today, 110 years of history have been built one patron, one book, and one community connection at a time.

We're proud to celebrate 30 years in this building, and more than a century of library service to our community.

Here's to the history we've preserved, the memories we've made, and the future still ahead! 🥳
