Lucas County Canine Care & Control handles stray and homeless dogs and enforces dog laws in Lucas County, which is in northwest Ohio, including the City of Toledo. We have a staff of 32 people, including our Director, the Office Manager, the Kennel Supervisor, the Community Engagement Manager, the Community Outreach Coordinator, six Canine Control Officers, three Front Desk Clerks, two Dispatchers, the Personalized Adoption Counselor, ten Canine Care Technicians, one Veterinarian, two Veterinary Technicians, one Veterinary Assistant, the Behavior and Enrichment Coordinator, and the Canine Care Attendant. Our department is funded primarily through the purchase of dog licenses. Your dog license purchase not only helps to protect your dog, but also helps us care for homeless and stray dogs, protect the community from loose and dangerous dogs, and help reunite lost dogs and their owners.

Meet Purell! This girl is always happy, always wiggling and always ready to see her people! She is truly such a social, friendly girl who seems to have a smile on her face wherever she goes.

Purell is a lower-energy girl who is perfectly content to hang out by your side and chew on a bone, but she’s also happy to head out for a walk—and she does great on leash! At 4 years old, she’s past the puppy phase but still has plenty of life and love left to give.

Having a bad day? Come meet Purell. We’re pretty sure her happy smile will be contagious!

Sweet senior Hedwig is still waiting for his forever home! ❤️

At 8 years old, the shelter is no place for a sweet old man like Hedwig—and he’s been here for nearly TWO MONTHS. He deserves to spend his golden years in a cozy home with someone who will love and spoil him.

Hedwig is lower energy, walks great on a leash, knows sit, and absolutely loves neck scratches. He is such a sweet old man who would love nothing more than to be someone’s loyal companion.

Patricia has been with us since May and has become one of our long-stay residents. We truly don’t understand how this gorgeous girl is still waiting for her forever home!

Patricia is about 2 years old and 50 lbs. She’s friendly, lower energy, and loves giving kisses and getting butt scratches. She knows sit and shake, takes treats gently, and loves carrying her toys around. She’s also always excited to learn new skills! 🥰

Kane is available and ready to meet you! This handsome 11-month-old Great Dane weighs 105 lbs and was surrendered when his owner no longer had the time to care for him.

Kane is reported to be a wonderful housemate! He reportedly does well in the car, likes his crate, is housebroken, and is non-destructive. He also knows sit, shake, and lay down! Most importantly, this gentle giant is an amazingly sweet boy. 💙

Thumbelina is looking for a home!

Thumbelina is a 2-year-old girl who was found as a stray, shaking and shivering on a finder’s porch. When she first arrived at the shelter on 9/16, she was terrified—but even through her fear, she was incredibly sweet.

Since arriving, Thumbelina has made huge strides in her confidence! She now gives plenty of kisses, loves to snuggle up with her favorite people, and is the definition of a Velcro dog. 🥰 She also knows sit, is very treat-motivated, and takes treats gently.

This sweet girl has come so far, and now she’s ready for the next step: finding a family of her own. ❤️

This 1-year-old, 48-pound Rottweiler is one happy, social girl! Arlene does well with other dogs, loves getting outside to run and play, and has a goofy side that comes out when she’s tossing toys around. She also knows how to sit, takes treats gently, and is just as happy settling beside you for some quiet time.
Arlene is the perfect mix of playful and easygoing, and she’s ready to find a home where she can be part of the family. 🐾❤️

DK is a handsome Husky mix who is currently being treated for heartworm disease. While he works through treatment, he’s looking for a foster home where he can relax, be spoiled, and have a comfortable place to recover. ❤️

DK’s story is also a reminder of why year-round heartworm prevention is so important. Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes, and even dogs who spend most of their time indoors can be exposed. Once a dog is infected, treatment can be lengthy, expensive, and hard on their body but heartworm disease is preventable with regular veterinary-approved prevention.

🎃 HALLOWEEN ADOPTION SPECIAL 🎃

We currently have around 40 amazing dogs waiting to meet you. All adoptable dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and current on preventatives.
(Note: Dogs 5 months or younger or under 25 pounds are excluded. A $25 Lucas County dog license purchase is required.)
