Yesterday was a huge day for our department! After three years of planning, design, and construction, Shawnee County DOC is pleased to announce the opening of its new Behavioral Health Unit, where specialized housing and programming will help with the safe management and stabilization of inmates who suffer with severe and persistent mental illness.

At a grand opening event on August 24, 2026, federal, state, county, and city officials, as well as representatives from major stakeholder agencies and community service organizations toured the new facility and had opportunity to discuss the programming scheduled to begin as the first part of the new facility opens for business later this month.

This week, Shawnee County Kansas and the Shawnee County Department of Corrections recognized Men's Health Week. The campaign included raising awareness of the health challenges facing men and encouraged preventive care, early detection, mental wellness, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Ladies and gentlemen, our Spring 2026 Academy graduates! This group of Corrections Specialists and support staff recently completed a 4 week Corrections Academy, and along the way, gained valuable tools and skills they can utilize in their careers with the department. They worked well as a team and gave maximum effort through everything they did during this academy!
