Next week Richland County Health Department will be in Wahpeton offering flu and covid vaccines at the Wahpeton Senior Center on Monday September 28th from 10 AM to NOON.
We will also be in Hankinson offering flu and covid vaccines at the Hankinson Community Center on September 30th from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Help your baby sleep safely by following these important safe-sleep practices:

✔️ Place baby on their back for every sleep.
✔️ Use a firm, flat sleep surface made for infants.

Important reminders:
• Bats have very small teeth that may not leave visible marks
• Contact your healthcare provider if you were scratched or bitten by a bat
• Even if you don’t see a bite or scratch, contact your healthcare provider if a bat was found in a room with a sleeping, unattended child or someone who may not be able to reliably recognize or report an exposure.

🦇 Rabies Awareness: Stay Safe Around Bats

Four bats in North Dakota have tested positive for rabies in 2026. As bat activity increases in late summer and early fall, it’s important to take precautions to protect yourself, your family and your pets.

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but it is 100% preventable in people when treatment is started promptly after exposure.

Here are a few important reminders:

• Never handle a bat with your bare hands.
• Watch for unusual behavior, such as bats active during the day, on the ground and unable to fly, or having direct contact with people or pets.
• Keep bats out by sealing small openings, screening windows and vents, capping chimneys, and keeping exterior doors closed. Bats can squeeze through openings as small as ¼ inch.
• Wear protective clothing and gloves when cleaning areas where bats may be present.
• Make sure all dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies.
• If a bat has contact with a person or pet—or is found in a room where someone was sleeping or a child was present—do not release or handle it. Wear thick gloves and safely contain it, then contact HHS for guidance.
