Thanks to generous donations from Capital Area Food Bank and the Franciscans, our food pantry has been well stocked over the past two weeks! Shoppers had access to produce like apples, potatoes, and peppers, as well as fresh bread and butter. We are grateful to our partners for helping us promote food security for the community.

We are sad to share that this past week was our last with our Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) member, Annie. Over the past year, Annie has supported the McKenna Center as our Food Pantry Coordinator. In this role she was responsible for daily guest processing, directing food pantry volunteers, coordinating restocks, and ensuring that the food pantry remains a welcoming, high-quality experience for our clients.

During her time with us Annie has become an integral part of our staff and a familiar, friendly face to volunteers and clients alike. Whether greeting guests at the front desk or unloading a pantry delivery, she has brought joy and experience to our daily operations.

On behalf of the entire Father McKenna Center, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks for Annie’s tireless work, passion, and spirit of service. Under her leadership, the food pantry has served thousands of clients, distributed over 100,000 pounds of food, and grown as a program. We are blessed to have had her as part of the McKenna Center family.

Please join us in wishing Annie the very best of luck as she pursues medical school this coming fall. We are grateful for all she has done, and we hope to see her again in the future!

We had an amazing weeklong immersion group from join us during the last week of June to round out a busy month of immersion trips. These volunteers spent much of their time supporting our day programming by serving food to our guests and helping prepare a week's worth of meals. They also decorated a cake for the men! Chef Russell, Paul, and the rest of the kitchen staff loved their enthusiasm and sincerely appreciated all of their hard work. We can’t wait to welcome back another Holy Child group later this year!

We appreciate all our younger volunteers who willingly spend part of their summer time off at the McKenna Center! Demand for our services remains high during this time, so it is crucial that we have a dedicated group of volunteers to carry out day-to-day programs. Over the last few months, we’ve had high school and college students help out in the pantry, kitchen, and during meal services. Even with the extremely warm weather, the McKenna Center remains open and committed to aiding those in need, thanks in no small part to these volunteers.

About a month ago, we welcomed Hunter to the team as a Food Pantry Associate. In the weeks since, he has become a valuable part of the McKenna Center staff, helping to set up, organize, and guide guests through our client-choice food pantry. He has also worked alongside the young volunteers who visited the McKenna Center through summer immersion trips, helping them learn the ins and outs of the pantry and ensuring that our guests always receive a smooth shopping experience. We're grateful to have Hunter on the team!

On Wednesday we received tons of generous food donations from our partners , , and the Hoya Harvest Garden at Georgetown University! Fresh produce is an important staple in our client-choice food pantry, allowing guests to select from a range of high quality and garden-grown options. A special thank you as well to our volunteers who took the time to sort and store this large delivery of fresh food. We are lucky to have such dedicated partners and volunteers!
