🪏 Join us in celebrating today’s official groundbreaking for Ascension Via Christi East ER, a freestanding emergency department near the intersection of E. 21st Street N. and N. 127th Street E. The project is expected to be complete in mid 2027. 🚑

“Via Christi is committed to ensuring that people across our community have access to high-quality, compassionate care when and where they need it,” said Tripp Owings, Chief Executive Officer of Via Christi. “By bringing 24/7 emergency expertise directly to this neighborhood, we are strengthening our ability to meet the needs of those we’re privileged to serve and ensuring they have a direct link to the specialized care provided across our hospital campuses.”

Approximately 40 physicians and associates will staff the new 11,250-square-foot emergency department, which will include two triage rooms, ten treatment rooms, advanced imaging technology including an X-ray and CT scanner, and an onsite laboratory. More than 10,000 patients are expected to receive care annually at the site.

Ascension Via Christi East ER will serve as an additional access point for emergency care in the Wichita area. Patients needing continuing or specialized treatment can be seamlessly transferred, as needed, to one of Via Christi’s acute care hospitals.

Dr. Howard Chang, Medical Director for Via Christi St. Francis’ Emergency Department added, “Access to timely care is the cornerstone of emergency medicine, and this new site ensures that East Wichita residents have that resource in their own backyard. When every minute matters, access to care close to home can save lives.”

🌸 Creating comforting, joyful spaces for our most vulnerable patients 🐇

During September and year round, the care team in Via Christi St. Joseph's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit cherish opportunities to create cheerful spaces to support emotional well-being and positively influence the healing process of our littlest patients.

The charming spaces pictured here were made possible through a partnership with Dec My Room, a unique charitable program dedicated to transforming the hospital experience for pediatric and young adult patients facing extended stays. By surrounding patients and their families with things that feel familiar and joyful, Dec My Room helps brighten spirits, support emotional well-being and positively influence the healing process in the NICU at St. Joseph and in Pediatrics at St. Francis. ✨

Congratulations to Karla, Via Christi St. Joseph PACU/Recovery, on being named a DAISY Foundation Award winner. The DAISY Award is presented to nurses as a way to thank them for the care and kindness they provide. Nurses can be nominated by patients, families and peers.

Karla's nomination came from a patient who had Karla twice as their caregiver. It read, in part: "I am so grateful for her amazing care... Karla asked if she could pray with us, and the amount of kindness and comfort that brought to me during a very worrisome time was immense... Karla may not have been with me long hours at the bedside, but she was there both times when I needed comfort and reassurance. She cared for me physically, mentally and spiritually."

Orian's nomination came from a patient who came to the hospital after a series of seizures. It read, in part: "Orian was so very caring and compassionate, and got me out of my bubble by just talking with me... Thank you from the bottom of my heart, from one healthcare worker to another."

Here are the highlights to help you stay healthy and informed:
🩺 Understanding insulin: Diabetes happens when the body has trouble making or using insulin properly. Knowing how your body processes sugar is the first step!
