For Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, today we want to take a look at prevention strategies! The best way to prevent lead poisoning is by removing lead from the environment.

This can include:
• Safely removing and disposing of lead-based paint
• Removing any items containing lead
• Regularly cleaning your home
• Maintaining paint, fixtures, and plumbing

Regular blood lead testing is an inexpensive and effective way to to determining if lead exposure has occurred.

For the end of SIDS Awareness Month, today we want to focus on the programs available at the Health Department that can help reduce the likelihood of SIDS.

Our Home Visiting Program aims to connect new and expecting moms with guidance, education, support, and resources to ensure their newborn has a healthy start in life.

This program is available free of charge and visits are personalized to fit your needs!
One of the biggest factors for SIDS is the infant’s sleep environment. Our Safe Sleep Program works to improve sleep environments by providing education and resources to new parents. Visit www.SafeSleepKansas.org to learn more.

The Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) Program is a supplemental food assistance program created by the USDA. WIC eligible families can receive nutritional education, supplemental foods, and support to help improve family health.

WIC services are free of charge to Cowley County families who qualify.

Flu Season is here!

The flu or influenza is a viral illness that circulates seasonally. Due to its tendency to mutate rapidly, it’s difficult to create a vaccine that can grant long-term immunity, which is why we need yearly flu shots.

Flu shots provide the best protection from the flu virus and are very safe. Each year’s shot provides specific protection from the main flu strains in circulation.
Infection can still happen due to the many strains of flu out there.

However, your flu shot will still grant you protection by easing the symptoms and lessening the time spent sick.

Flu season is here and if you do start feeling sick, make sure you use the best practices to keep yourself and others safe!

First and foremost, stay home and rest! You need time to fight off and recover from an infection. Plus, it keeps you from getting others sick.

Here are some more tips for you:
• Get Tested - Many illnesses have flu-like symptoms, so getting tested helps to figure out which illness is present.
• Get Rest - Get plenty of sleep and take it easy. Let your body fight off the infection and recover.
• Drink and Eat - Drink plenty of water and make sure you eat enough. Being sick can take its toll, so be sure to get plenty of nutrition.
• Medicine - Using over-the-counter medicines can help alleviate the symptoms while you get better.

Our Early Detection Works (EDW) program provides no-cost cervical & breast cancer screenings for uninsured & underinsured women. This program also offers education and referrals for advanced care.
