Have you ever seen a Baltimore Oriole's nest? 🪹 Well if you stop by our fair barn you can! We have two on display thanks to JD Domer.

Baltimore Orioles weave intricate, hanging pouch nests high in canopy trees using plant fibers, bark, and even human-made materials like yarn to protect their eggs and young from predators and brood parasites. The female performs most of the nest-building, a complex process that can take over a week, while the male defends the territory. Both parents feed the chicks, who hatch 12 to 14 days after the female lays 4 to 6 eggs.

Can't make it to the fair? Try attracting your own Baltimore Orioles. They eat insects, fruit, and nectar. 🐜🍊🎋 You can set out fruit or jelly and see if they stop by!

Yesterday, John had the opportunity to share hands-on learning about Ohio’s native wildlife with students at the 2026 Wayne County Fair - Ohio. If you missed his presentation, no worries! You can stop by our fair barn anytime this week to explore more of what we have to offer! 🦫🦌

💡 Lots of learning opportunities today at the Wayne County Fair - Ohio, including a presentation by our District Program Administrator, John Lorson, at the Grange Rotunda. Learn about Ohio wildlife with real examples of skins and skulls to see and touch! 🧐🦫

Monday, September 14

10:30 a.m. Insect Adventures with the Bug Zoo - Staff from the United Titanium Bug Zoo, located at the Ohio State University Wooster Campus, will bring some of the zoo’s Ohio native insects for a hands-on learning experience.

11:30 a.m. Make and Take - Join Kaitlynn Tonn, OSU Extension Wayne County FCS Educator, to decorate a pot and start your own herb plant from a seed.

1:00 p.m. Skins and Skulls – Mammals of Ohio - John Lorson, Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation District program manager, will talk about Ohio’s mammals complete with skulls, fur and even a few surprise artifacts. Come see, touch and learn about your wild Ohio neighbors!

2:00 p.m. Creature Feature - Serena Solis, from the Wilderness Center of Wilmont will bring the center’s ambassador animals-Zea, a red corn snake, and Gus, an Eastern box turtle, and teach us all about them.

Promoting Native Plants and Pollinators in Wayne County
This morning was the first meeting
for this group of conservation-minded individuals who are making it their mission to organize, educate, encourage and enable folks to “plant native.”
It’s good for us, it’s great for our pollinators and it’s wonderful for our environment!
Help us make it happen!

🪏 “Soil. Where it all Begins” was the theme for the National Association of Conservation Districts' 2026 Poster Contest. These Wayne County 1st place winners advanced to the State level and we are proud to announce Madi received 2nd place in the State Contest! 🏆🎉 Our local winners received a cash prize and certificate, and their posters will be displayed at the Fair in the Wayne SWCD/STW Recycling Building from September 12-17.
