NWS: Tornado struck Eastern York High School and surrounding neighborhoods

The National Weather Service office in State College PA and
local Emergency Services are currently conducting a storm
survey in York and Lancaster Counties. The survey is in
relation to the severe thunderstorms that moved through
the area on August 20, 2026.

* The team of NWS Meteorologists and York County Department
of Emergency Services has done a survey of damage south of
Wrightsville, PA, specifically at and around Eastern York High
School.

* The team has confirmed that the damage in that immediate area
was caused by a tornado.

* The team will be making a determination on the strength/length
of the tornado after further review of the damage.

* The team is headed to Lancaster County to work with the
Lancaster County Department of Public Safety to survey damage
on the east side of the river.

A final assessment including results of this survey are expected
to be completed and transmitted via a Public Information

Tonight prior to the fireworks in Wrightsville borough a storm passed through the area causing damage to structures and infrastructure. Hellam Fire Company and Wrightsville Fire responded to numerous calls for service while working with mutual aid to continue coverage for the fireworks. Chief 41 activated the emergency operations center to support the response efforts. EMA split duties between the EMC and deputy to support both operations. The teamwork demonstrated to protect the citizens affected by the storm and those attending the fireworks was seamless.
