Building a world-class National Qualifications Framework for South Africa, which contributes to the full personal development of lifelong learners

The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) participated in the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) Nationwide Capacity-Building Workshop held at South West Gauteng TVET College, Technisa Campus on 28 and 29 October 2026.

The workshop provided an important platform for SAQA to engage directly with Skills Development Providers (SDPs), respond to frequently raised questions and clarify matters relating to SAQA’s mandate.

Through these engagements, SAQA continues to promote understanding of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and strengthen collaboration with stakeholders across the education, training and skills development sectors.

Through initiatives like these, SAQA continues to bring NQF information closer to communities, empowering people to make informed decisions about their learning and career pathways.

Chief Learning Officer at Instructure, Melissa Loble, explored “The Future of Learning in the AI World” at the Groningen Declaration Network (GDN) Annual Meeting 2026, co-hosted by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) last week. Her presentation highlighted the importance of prioritising critical thinking, creativity, communication, ethical decision-making and adaptability, while using AI to enhance learner-centred education and lifelong learning.

The final day of the Groningen Declaration Network (GDN) Annual Meeting 2026 co-hosted by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) has come to an end.

The meeting brought together 166 registrants from around the world for 45 sessions exploring the future of digital credentials, qualifications recognition, data exchange and learner mobility.

Over three days, delegates shared knowledge, exchanged ideas and strengthened connections, paving the way for continued international collaboration towards more connected, inclusive and accessible education systems.

Thank you to all our speakers, delegates, partners and exhibitors who contributed to making this meeting a success. Together, we continue to advance conversations and solutions that support the recognition and portability of qualifications across borders.

𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐃𝐍 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠

The final day of the Groningen Declaration Network (GDN) Annual Meeting 2026, co-hosted by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) continued with thought-provoking discussions on credential recognition, digital innovation and learner mobility, bringing together international experts to share knowledge and explore practical solutions.

The programme featured breakaway sessions on breaking the “paper ceiling” through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), the evolving role of credential recognition in supporting mobility, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to advance education systems. Delegates also explored credential interoperability in Japan, digital learning history documents, the role of EMREX in supporting graduates’ career pathways, and the integration of micro-credentials into national professional registries.

A key highlight was the collaborative workshop, where participants worked in facilitated groups to identify practical, high-impact initiatives that the GDN community could advance over the next two years. Discussions focused on three key themes: Open Recognition; Interoperability, AI and Standards; and Workforce Skills Recognition.

The workshop aimed to translate the GDN’s new policy pillars into action by identifying community priorities, potential partnerships, funding pathways and actionable next steps.

The day also included the GDN Annual Business Meeting, providing an opportunity to engage on matters relating to the network and its future direction.

As the GDN Annual Meeting draws to a close in Cape Town, the discussions and collaborations reinforce the importance of working together to build more connected, inclusive and interoperable education systems that support credential recognition and learner mobility across borders.

The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) is participating in the MAT-EXPO 2026, hosted by the Free State Department of Education from 22–23 October 2026 at the Maluti Bus Services Depot in Phuthaditjhaba, QwaQwa.

The expo provides a valuable platform to engage with Grade 11 learners and educators on the importance of career planning, qualifications awareness and informed education and training choices.

SAQA aims to promote awareness of South Africa’s National Qualifications Framework (NQF), encourage learners to explore different learning pathways, and highlight the importance of accessing reliable information when making decisions about future studies and careers

The final day of the Groningen Declaration Network (GDN) Annual Meeting 2026 co-hosted by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) is underway in Cape Town, with morning sessions exploring the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of education, skills recognition and learner mobility.

Professor and Founder of the Inclusive AI Lab at Utrecht University, Prof. Payal Arora, addressed the question, “Whose Knowledge Counts? AI, Inclusion, and the Future of Global Credential Recognition”, examining how AI can support more inclusive approaches to credential recognition by acknowledging informal learning, community-based knowledge and diverse educational pathways.

Chief Learning Officer at Instructure, Melissa Loble, explored “The Future of Learning in the AI World”, highlighting the need for education systems to prioritise critical thinking, creativity, communication, ethical decision-making and adaptability, while using AI to enhance learner-centred education and lifelong learning.
