Some photographs deserve a moment of their own. These beautiful images from our students’ Duke of Ed Adventurous Journey in the Whitsundays certainly qualify.

With water like that, you could be forgiven for thinking the itinerary was entirely leisure. There was, however, plenty of learning behind those views.

The Adventurous Journey asks students to take responsibility for a shared goal, working through challenges in an unfamiliar environment. It means making decisions together and recognising when someone needs a hand. Confidence grows through experience, as students discover what they can contribute and how much they can rely on one another.

A spectacular setting for lessons you have to live to learn.

There is nothing more powerful than the imagination. Indeed, it is the ultimate traveller. There is nowhere it can’t go, and nothing it can’t experience. Australia’s international best-selling author, Markus Zusak, has made a career of travelling between his ears and inviting the rest of us on extraordinary journeys through times and places. Now, as part of the CGS Author Spotlight Series, he is coming to speak with the Canberra Grammar School community.

Markus is the author of six novels, including The Messenger, Bridge of Clay and The Book Thief – one of the most loved books of the twenty-first century and a New York Times bestseller for more than a decade. His books have been adapted into film, television and theatre, and translated into more than fifty languages – and have been awarded numerous honours around the world, ranging from literary prizes to bookseller and readers’ choice awards.

This rare opportunity to hear from one of our most renowned storytellers will take place on Thursday 12 November from 5:00pm to 6:30pm, and is free for all members of the CGS community – including staff, students and families.

Our guitar tutor recently performed in the semi-final of the ABC Young Performers Awards, with his recital also featured by the ABC.

Please enjoy a short snippet of his moving performance, it’s hard to believe there’s just one person on the stage!

Mr Whyte leads our Primary Guitar Ensemble, Senior Advanced Guitar Ensemble and Senior Guitar Ensemble. What a privilege for our students to learn from a musician performing at this level.

Six teams, four grand finals, three premiers! Congratulations to CGS Rugby on an outstanding finish to the 2026 season.

Over the past few weeks, six teams reached their respective semi-finals: U10 Mixed, U11 Mixed, U13 Boys, U15 Boys, 1st XII Girls and 1st XV Boys. Four progressed to the Grand Final, with U11 Mixed, U13 Boys and U15 Boys claiming premierships.

Rugby has long been part of the fabric of Canberra Grammar School, and recent results reflect our community's continued commitment to building upon the programme and the calibre of the players and coaches who bring it to life.

Congratulations to all involved on a fantastic season and for representing CGS with pride, passion, and sportsmanship.

There’s plenty happening in CGS Basketball! 🏀

We're incredibly excited to announce that Jess Bibby is joining CGS Basketball from Term 4.

For anyone who knows Australian basketball, this is a name that needs no introduction. She has played more than 200 WNBL games and won multiple WNBL Championships, was drafted to the WNBA by the New York Liberty in 2000, and has represented Australia as an Opal. She also took her talents to the AFLW with GWS, proof of her ability as an elite athlete across codes.

At CGS, Jess will run our Thursday JPL shooting sessions, working directly with our top athletes, and lead a series of clinics to support and upskill our coaches.

An outstanding sportswoman, coach and role model, Jess is a fantastic addition to our program. Welcome, Jess!

Our UC Capitals partnership kicked off at their WNBL season launch, where CGS Basketball Captain Natalia Doogan presented the season jersey to Isabel Palmer.

Congratulations also to Ruby Champion and Myrah Dahal on receiving Basketball Australia’s She Hoops Leadership and Confidence Scholarship, including elite mentoring and a three-day camp at the AIS!

It’s a time of countdowns. While some students are counting down until the summer holidays, others are counting down until new sporting seasons start this weekend. And of course, there are our Year 12 students who are counting down until their exams finish (and begin too!). The HSC kicked off today, and the IB exams start on Friday 23 October. Let’s wish all Year 12’ers everywhere ‘good luck’, and may the coming weeks be stepping stones to happy and fulfilled lives beyond school. Onwards you go as we all work our way through the start of the fourth and final term for the year. May it be a great one for all of us.

We are thrilled to introduce Mark Prater, our new Head Coach of Rowing.

Mark arrives with 25 years on the water and a record that speaks for itself. He has been Head Coach at Sydney High, Director of Rowing at Sydney University and a Senior Coach at the Australian Rowing’s - National Training Centre.

He has coached at three Olympic Games, steering the Australian Men’s Quad to bronze in Tokyo. His athletes have taken silver and bronze at World Championships across a decade and gold on the World Cup circuit.

Yet ask Mark about his proudest moment and he will not speak of himself. He will tell you instead about an athlete he guided for twelve years, who in Tokyo stepped onto an Olympic podium. It is a telling answer and precisely the sort of coach we are delighted to welcome.

He’s on the water before most of us rise and holds a genuine fondness for a good sunrise. After 25 years the appeal has not dimmed. “I love being out on the water helping people figure out how to row fast.”

Mark’s philosophy is a simple one. “A great rowing programme is built on teamwork.” He hopes CGS students will relish the challenge, forge lasting friendships and take from the boat a set of stills for life.

They say it’s the fast lane once you leave school.

For CGS alumni Zach Bates, it has led straight to the top of Mount Panorama.

We are enormously proud to see Zach’s historic Bathurst qualifying performance celebrated by his family and the wider motorsport community.

Mr Smart sends a special shout-out: “Congratulations, Zach. What an extraordinary achievement, the whole CGS community is incredibly proud of you and will be cheering you on.”

School is out! In the blink of an eye (more than a few teary eyes, actually), at the end of Term 3, our 209 Year 12 students celebrated the end of their CGS journeys. From the powerful bonding of a First Nations smoking ceremony to the frenetic water fights, assemblies and a valedictory dinner students basked in moment after moment of memory-making. It all led to the traditional ‘walk-out’ through corridors of younger students, staff, and glowing parents. Amidst the backslaps, handshakes, hugs, bouquets of flowers, balloons, and yes, some sobbing too, came the realisation that new lives were dawning. Exams, anxious waits for results and acceptances lie ahead. So do gap years, and uncertainties of not knowing what to do next. Let’s pause for a moment and wish everyone the best of luck for exams and beyond. Thank you to every single student for what you brought to Canberra Grammar School. Be proud of what you have achieved. May the roads ahead be full of joy, good health and learning. Onwards! Forever onwards!

3D or not 3D? That is the question. As for the answer? Definitely 3D!
Congratulations to CGS Year 12 Design and Technology students Freddy and Henry whose Major Projects have been nominated for inclusion in SHAPE, an exhibition of outstanding HSC works in Sydney next March. Freddy designed L-flip, a 3D printed driver learner plate that is mounted inside a vehicle and can flip automatically, meaning there’s no more need for manually taking a plate on and off. Henry designed TerrariTeach, a 3D printed propagation kit that helps primary school students learn about growing plants. What brilliant ideas! Typically, nominated works earn 58/60 or above. Great work Freddy and Henry!
