Here's a summary from last night's Hobart City Council meeting, held Monday 31 August 2026:

🔹Battery Point Walkway: Council will seek further information on Crown licences covering public land along the proposed walkway route, with councillors to receive detailed advice before making any future decisions on the project.

🔹Multi-Year City Partnerships: Council approved multi-year partnership agreements with major events and organisations (Business Events Tasmania, the Australian Wooden Boat Festival, Hobart International, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and the Kunanyi Mountain Run) providing certainty for organisers while supporting tourism, economic growth and Hobart's reputation as a leading events destination.

🔹Support for Homelessness & Social Support Groups: Fee waivers for community spaces will help five grassroots organisations continue providing food, connection and practical support to people experiencing homelessness, housing stress and cost-of-living pressures.

🔹Health and Wellbeing Strategy: Council endorsed a new strategic framework focused on healthy ageing, mental health and community wellbeing, with an aspiration for Hobart to become Australia's first Blue Zone city.

🔹Advocacy on Proposed Aviation Charge Increases: Council will prepare a submission to the ACCC highlighting Tasmania's reliance on air travel and the potential impacts of increased aviation charges on residents, visitors and businesses.

🔹PlanBuild Planning Portal: Council will advocate to the State Government for urgent improvements to the PlanBuild planning portal, citing ongoing usability issues and their impact on applicants, industry professionals and council staff.

🚲💚 A subLIME new way to get around our city!

A fresh fleet of shared Lime e-bikes are rolling out across Hobart, giving residents and visitors an easy, affordable, and sustainable way to get around the city.

Designed specifically for Hobart's streets, these bikes are smaller and more compact than Lime's standard fleet, making them a great fit for our local conditions.

Whether you're commuting to work, heading to class, running errands, or exploring your neighbourhood, Lime e-bikes offer an active transport option while reducing emissions and helping you leave the car at home.

Lime e-bikes are now our dedicated shared micromobility option, replacing hire-and-ride e-scooters and offering a transport solution that better suits our streets and cycling infrastructure.

We're also introducing designated parking zones and no-terminate areas in the inner city to help keep streets, footpaths and public spaces safe and accessible for everyone. Riders are asked to park responsibly at the end of their trip and leave clear access for pedestrians, building entrances, crossings, bus stops and accessibility access points. Poorly parked bikes may result in warnings or penalties from the operator.

To ride a Lime e-bike you must:

✅ Wear a helmet
✅ Follow Tasmanian Road Rules
✅ Ride with care
✅ Park responsibly when you're done riding

Here's a preview of what's on the agenda for the next Council meeting, being held at 4pm on Monday 31 August 2026:

🔹 Battery Point Walkway
Council will receive the findings of extensive investigations into the proposed Battery Point Walkway, including community feedback, engineering, planning, legal and financial considerations, and will consider recommendations on the future of the project.

🔹 Health and Wellbeing Framework
Council will consider a proposed framework that sets out how the City will support community health and wellbeing, with a focus on healthy ageing and mental health in response to changing legislative requirements and local demographic trends.

🔹 Multi-year City Partnership Agreements
Council will consider proposed long-term partnership agreements with Business Events Tasmania, the Australian Wooden Boat Festival, Hobart International, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and the Kunanyi Mountain Run to support events and organisations that contribute to Hobart's economy, tourism and community life.

🔹 Fee waivers for homelessness and social support groups
A recommendation will be considered to continue venue hire fee waivers for five community-led organisations providing food relief, social support and assistance to people experiencing homelessness, housing stress and cost of living pressures.

A summary from the Planning Authority Committee meeting held on Wednesday 26 August 2026:

🔹 Visitor Accommodation Specific Area Plan endorsed
The draft amendment to limit new whole dwelling visitor accommodation in residential zones will now be referred to the Tasmanian Planning Commission, with the aim of improving housing availability and affordability for long term residents.

🔹 Macquarie Point deconstruction assessment supported
The Planning Authority endorsed an impact assessment for the removal of the Goods Shed and Red Shed, with independent experts finding low risk to nearby road infrastructure when mitigation measures are in place.
Between Planning Authority Committee meetings, the City's Planning Officers are busy reviewing a range of residential and commercial development applications for Hobart.

🔹Since the last meeting, 21 development applications delegated to council officers were approved while 22 development applications are currently being advertised.

For more than 40 years, Terrapin has amazed audiences with giant puppets, interactive installations and imaginative performances. This year, they'll be helping bring the pageant to life through community workshops and creating a brand new puppet for the pageant 🎭

With Expressions of Interest now open, we're inviting community groups, schools, clubs, performers, creatives and community minded organisations to help make this year's pageant bigger, brighter and more magical than ever.

🔥 One v**e. One battery. One catastrophic fire. 🔋💥

⚠️ Batteries, v**es, mobile phones, gas bottles, electronics and flares can explode and start fires when placed in household bins.

🚛 Just one flammable item can destroy a collection truck, shut down a waste facility, and put workers' lives at risk.

Eighteen months ago, one of our City of Hobart waste trucks caught fire in Sandy Bay. The driver was forced to empty the burning load onto the street to prevent the fire from spreading.

💔 Our waste workers face this risk every day.
