Connecting with industry peers in Broken Hill.

Last week, NetWaste had the pleasure of hosting both the NetWaste Regional Waste Forum and RENEW Group Forum at Broken Hill City Council.

A big thanks to our very own, Bill Tink, who procured and presented this year’s 2026 Waste 2 Art regional exhibition. Visitors were both impressed and inspired on how waste can both be presented as art, and also completely recyclable at the same time.

We also had inspections of the Broken Hill City Waste Facility and Channing’s Bottle Yard, who are flying the flag for ongoing glass recycling in such an isolated region.

It was a great opportunity for NetWaste, Regional Coordinators and the NSW EPA to catch up and discuss important issues.

Thank you to Broken Hill City Council for hosting us and showing us your fantastic
‘Can do’ attitude towards waste management.

Sort your scrap.

Good compost starts in your FOGO green bin.

Don’t let your food organics and garden organics end up in landfill.

Here’s some tips and tricks to make it easy to use your FOGO green bin:

✔️Place leftover meat, seafood and similar foods scraps in the freezer until collection day to reduce odours

✔️Drain excess liquids from food scraps before putting them into your kitchen caddy or FOGO green bin

✔️Place a layer of leaves or other garden organics in your bin before putting food scraps to reduce odours and soak up moisture (it helps to layer your bin between food and garden organics)

Recognising Waste 2 Art.

Each year, Waste 2 Art brings together artists from across the NetWaste region to showcase their creativity and originality.

Whether amateur or professional, there is one common goal: repurpose waste into works of art.

Recently, Bill Tink, NetWaste’s Environmental Learning Advisor, presented a Certificate of Outstanding Work to Andrew Oxley.

The local metalwork artist created a beautiful Kookaburra sculpture called ‘Kooky’.

The piece was chosen to be shown at Coffs Waste Conference, as part of the Waste 2 Art exhibition, which shines a spotlight on the initiative to waste industry delegates from across Australia.

Congratulations Andrew 👏🏼

Letting your imagination run wild.

Waste 2 Art has had another successful year across the region.

Community members, school students and artists within our communities have been busy creating artworks out of recycled waste materials that would have been destined for the bin.

With this year’s theme being ‘Shrink your Footprint’, it’s all about considering how much waste you produce and how you can shrink the amount in your everyday life.

Made out of recycled cardboard, this artwork is by Harry Kendall, and is named ‘Jim the Junk-o-Saurus’ and was part of the Western Plains Culture Centre 2026 Waste 2 Art exhibition and competition.

Waste 2 Art Regional Showcase 2026 🌈♻️🖼️

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday at the Official Opening of the 2026 Waste 2 Art Regional Showcase at the GeoCentre in Broken Hill.

The 2026 theme of ‘Shrink your Footprint’ has been a great thought-starter on how we can all reduce our waste footprint in our lives.

The artworks, derived from repurposed waste materials, have been exhibited across local Waste 2 Art exhibitions across the NetWaste region over the past few months.

It’s great to see community members from all walks of life come together to reduce and repurpose waste, and get creative creating art masterpieces.

Open until the 5 September, make sure you take a trip to Broken Hill to check out these thought-provoking pieces, encouraging us to all rethink our waste and environmentally impact.

Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone involved in running such a successful Waste 2 Art this year. To the councils, in particular Broken Hill City Council for being the host for the 2026 Regional Showcase, art galleries and local host locations, artists and community members who viewed the exhibitions, thank you for making an impact towards a better future for us all.

It’s never too late to start making a difference with reducing your single-use plastic consumption.

Here’s a reminder of some small changes you can make in your everyday life:

♻️ Swapping from a single-use plastic bag to a reusable bag for your shopping
♻️ Choose a reusable water bottle that you can refill instead of a plastic one
♻️ Take a reusable cutlery set everywhere you go instead of using single-use options
♻️ Use reusable alternatives such as beeswax wraps to cover leftovers instead of cling wrap
♻️ Reuse your reusable coffee cup next time you head to your favourite cafe
