This week is National Volunteer Week, an opportunity to recognise and thank the nearly 70,000 volunteer members of the .

Whether you’re on the frontline, working behind the scenes or supporting in another way, your contributions are vital to protecting communities across NSW and Australia.

The 2026 theme, ‘Your Year To Volunteer’, celebrates the contributions of volunteers while encouraging people across Australia to get involved in a way that works for them.

Throughout the week, we’ll be shining a spotlight on a number of members and brigades. If you see an RFS member out and about this week, be sure to give them a wave or stop for a chat and find out how you can get involved. See less

HAZARD REDUCTION BURN (HR) - GOOBANG 🚒

A very successful week last week with our fantastic teams accomplishing two complex hazard reductions:

Goobang NP – Spring Gully HR (1444Ha)
Goobang NP – Rocky Ponds HR (2700Ha)

A special thank you to the staff and volunteers of the Cumnock, Baldry and Washpen Brigades - we thank you for your input and assistance in ensuring the success of this HR.

We thank all members that participated for their professionalism and hard work.

HAZARD REDUCTION

Crews will be onsite completing a hazard reduction (HR) burn on Wednesday 13 May 2026. The HR is on Lower Lewis Ponds Road, Clifton Grove.

The smoke from this burn may settle over the March / Clergate and North Orange area over the next couple of days.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the strength, dedication and compassion of mums everywhere, but especially those in our family.

Across the state, thousands of mothers, grandmothers, mothers-in-law, stepmothers and aunties give their time to help protect their communities. Whether they're on the frontline or supporting behind the scenes their contributions are extraordinary.

Today, we thank them for all they do, not just as RFS members, but as leaders and role models in our brigades and communities.

A good time to CHECK your SMOKE ALARM.

As we move into the colder months, fire agencies often see an increase in house fires as residents use their fireplaces and heaters to stay warm. With temperatures dropping and possible snow forecast across parts of the state in the coming days, it’s important you know how to stay safe.

Remember, you won’t smell smoke while you’re asleep, so make sure your bleeping smoke alarms are working. A working smoke alarm can save your life and give you and your family valuable time to escape a burning home.

Vale Roy Ferguson 6th May 2026

Today we received the sad news of the passing of one of our own, Mr Roy Ferguson Operations Support Officer.

Roy Ferguson was a true gentleman, always there to support. We send our sincere condolences to his lovely wife Kerrie and Roy’s family.

Roy’s RFS Story

Roy commenced service with 'District' Rural Fire Brigade, Blacktown in 1974, he also joined Blacktown SES in 1976 and served both organisations till moving to Orange in 1991 where he joined the Clifton Grove Rural Fire Brigade.

He held the role of Deputy Captain and Brigade Training Officer from 1996 to 2003. Roy was a very active and dedicated member of the Service and has attended numerous S44 fires and other incidents over his 41 years of service.

March 2004 Roy gained full time employment with the Service and has served as Team Manager for the North West Team, Bogan, Coonamble, Walgett and Warren – Regional office in Young as Assistant Operations Officer Region West.

Roy transferred back to Orange late 2007 and commenced with Canobolas Zone as Operations Support Officer, retiring in 2016.

In 2005 Roy was awarded a Bronze Bravery Medal by the Royal Humane Society of Australasia and in 2007 the Commissioners Commendation for Bravery.

Superintendent Brett Bowden said of Roy. "He eats, sleeps and breathes the community, that's what he does," he said.
