PDH has an operating budget of $52m, approximately 461 staff (310 FTE). Portland’s health services are steeped in history with land set aside in April 1858 for an asylum for the benefit of the afflicted or distressed inhabitants and sojourners. The trustees who reserved that land were James Blair, Charles Arthur Dodd, Francis Henty, Thomas Must and Thomas Finn. In 1912, permission was granted to convert the institution to a district hospital and it continued to operate from the original blue stone building until 1954 when the needs of Portland and District outgrew the facilities. The bluestone buildings were demolished and replaced by a new facility. Today, Portland District health is a public health service established under the Health Services Act 1988. Our health service was formed on 01 July 2003 through the amalgamation of the Portland and District Community Health Centre and the Portland and District Hospital.

One of our great partners United Way Glenelg are exploring interest in commencing a community Toy Library.
They would love to hear your thoughts via a short survey:

🧸🎲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱?🎲🧸

United Way Glenelg is exploring the possibility of re-establishing a Toy Library for local families, and we'd love to hear what our community thinks!

A Toy Library allows families to borrow toys, games, puzzles and learning resources, helping children learn through play while saving families money and reducing waste. ♻️👶📚

We need your feedback. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, carer, educator, retiree or community member, your input will help shape the future of this project.

The survey only takes a few minutes to complete. Survey closes 30 June 2026.

👉 Complete the survey here: https://forms.gle/Ry2rbGDQw3pzkdXP8

Please share this post and help us gauge community interest in bringing a Toy Library back to Portland! 💙

Portland District Health celebrates one year of the Free Fresh Food Swap — a community initiative bringing people together every Thursday at Portland Library to share homegrown and homemade produce. 🥳🎈

Over the past 12 months, more than 1,000 people have attended across 50 events, sharing over 500kg of vegetables, 600kg of fruit, 1,000 eggs, 250 jars of preserves, and much more. This equates to an over $9,000 worth of edible products swapped, shared, repurposed and prevented from going to waste.

What started as a simple produce swap has grown into a vibrant weekly community gathering focused on sharing food, learning, and social connection.

More than just food, the Swap has become a welcoming space to connect, share skills, and build friendships.

📍 Portland Library
🕙 Thursdays, 10am–12pm

Everyone is welcome. Bring your excess produce, homemade goods, seeds, jars, or just come for a chat and see what it’s all about.
