On 2 June 2026, a constructive and forward-looking exchange took place between Ambassador 🇳🇴 Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen and Home Minister of Bangladesh 🇧🇩 Mr. Salahuddin Ahmed. They discussed a wide range of issues spanning areas of Norway-Bangladesh cooperation, law and order situation including mob culture, a strong National Human Rights Commission, prospect of more Norwegian investment in Bangladesh, reforms in general including police reform, review of post 5 August 2024 cases as the government mentioned before, security of Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar and security during upcoming local elections among other issues.

𝟮𝟵 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗡 🇺🇳 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀. Under this year’s theme “Invest in Peace” the day calls for decisive action to ensure civilian and military peacekeepers have the resources to carry out their vital mandates.

🌍 Today, more than 53,000 civilians, military, and police personnel serve in 11 UN peacekeeping missions, facing increasingly complex and interconnected challenges in a shifting geopolitical landscape. In a time of tensions, peacekeeping is a proven and cost-effective way to restore stability and hope.

Norway 🇳🇴 and Bangladesh 🇧🇩 remain steady and trusted partners to UN Peacekeeping. Bangladesh is one of the largest contributors of peacekeepers, including women, to UN peace operations.

🎉 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗶𝘂’𝘀 “𝗙𝗷𝗼𝗿𝗱” 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗲 𝗱'𝗢𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟳𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹!

The Romanian-Norwegian co-production “Fjord” received several of the Cannes Film Festival’s most prestigious awards. The films “Elephants in the Fog” and “Ben’Imana” were also among this year’s award winners.

“Fjord” follows a deeply religious Norwegian-Romanian couple with five children who relocate from Romania to a small town in Norway. The film stars Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan and received support from the Norwegian 🇳🇴 Film Institute.

🤔 Remember, Wera Sæther and her organization ‘Mayer Tori’?

On 14 May, Wera and her team visited the Embassy. It was truly inspiring to listen to her story in her own words.

In 1998, Norwegian 🇳🇴 citizen, poet, photographer, and researcher Wera Sæther visited the flood-affected Char areas of Kurigram district where she developed a deep connection with the spiritual songs of Bangladesh (Marfati songs in Bangla) 🇧🇩.

💗🎵Guided by her enduring passion for folk music, she founded ‘Mayer Tori’ in 2016. Today, the initiative teaches 600 children in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat the timeless songs of Lalon, Baul, Bhawaiya and other folk songs. 150 children are learning to play traditional Bangladeshi musical instruments and some are even learning to play a Norwegian traditional folk music instrument – the Hardanger fiddle (Hardingfele in Norwegian).

🎶 With a clear mission of preserving the folk music and cultural heritage of Bangladesh while uplifting the marginalized communities that have kept these traditions alive, Mayer Tori is deeply committed to advancing social well-being for these communities.

🇳🇴🤝🇧🇩 Mayer Tori and Wera’s story stand as a powerful example of how culture can be a bridge between countries, people, one that unites hearts across borders.

On 18 May 2026, The Dhaka Tribune, with the support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dhaka, conducted a lively seminar titled "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗵". Eminent civil society members and politicians from BNP, Jamaat e Islami and NCP participated in the panel which was moderated by the Editor of Dhaka Tribune Reaz Ahmed. The panel discussion was followed by an animated Q&A-session. Some speakers were critical of the government for rescinding key ordnances issued by the interim government, including ones aimed to improve judicial independence, whereas others opined that the newly elected government should be given more time to deliver on their promise to enact new laws in this area following further consultations.

Norwegian 🇳🇴 ambassador to Bangladesh Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen highlighted the importance of judicial independence in his opening remarks, noting that the judiciary serves as the last resort for justice and fairness.

Retired justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury, who also served as the head of the Enforced Disappearance Commission and the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, was the chief guest at the event. He described the repeal and lapse of two key ordinances on the judiciary as “regressive steps,” mentioning that parts of both laws had already been implemented, including judicial appointments. He also warned that the developments created an “anomalous and chaotic situation” and “do not bode well for the nation.”
