What happens when a community decides to show up for its seniors? ❤️

A last-minute food and fundraising drive outside the ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen brought Calgarians together to support Unison’s Thrive seniors food bank and the response was incredible.

People arrived with bags of groceries, cheques and thousands of dollars in donations. But there were also hugs, tears and heartfelt reminders that seniors can sometimes be forgotten

Veteran Global Calgary broadcaster Leslie Horton is known for events like this. She knew that would Calgary respond. ❤️ $5,730 was raised plus truck loads of food.

Support Calgary's only food bank just for seniors with the Summer Food Drive.

This story has it all. Two older adults challenging what's "normal", both impacted by cancer, both completing a swim across Lake Winnipeg and now meeting each other in Victoria.

At 91, Kathie Leitch still believes in saying “Why not?”

In 1955, she became the first person to swim across Lake Winnipeg after her father dared her to do it. Decades later, living in Edmonton, she took on another challenge: completing an Ironman in her 50s

Kathie dragon boated for 10 years, cycled from Vancouver to Whistler and travelled to Antarctica, the Arctic and Mount Everest Base Camp.

But her life has also brought heartbreaking loss. She survived breast cancer, while her husband died of cancer and her younger son died from a brain tumour at just 53.

Through it all, Kathie says she has learned to keep moving forward.

Her message to older adults is simple: we may be capable of far more than we think.

This is part 2 of a story that features Alberta's Jonny Fenton who just became the oldest person to swim across Lake Winnipeg, raising tens of thousand of dollars for cancer.
