๐Ÿ’‰ A trip for lunch and live music comes with an unexpected bonus: a flu shot!

People who visit Unison at Kerby Centre on Wednesdays for food, friendship and live entertainment were happy to discover a flu clinic right where they were spending the day.

Jason was among those who welcomed the opportunity to get vaccinated without making a separate trip. Itโ€™s a convenient way to make staying healthy part of an already enjoyable outing!

We also spoke with Brandon Brost, owner of Pharmasave Edmonton Trail, about why flu vaccination is especially important for older adults and why staying up to date on COVID-19 vaccines still matters.

Bringing health services into the community can make a real difference especially when theyโ€™re right where people already gather. โค๏ธ

Not sure where to start? Merv Graham, a Kerby Centre technology volunteer, walks us through the process step by step from setting up a Government of Alberta account to understanding how to receive your payment.

We ask the questions you might have: What if youโ€™ve never used an e-transfer? What if you donโ€™t have a smartphone? And where can you get help if technology feels overwhelming?

๐Ÿ“… The application deadline has been extended to October 31, 2026. Some Albertans, including eligible recipients of the Alberta Seniors Benefit, are automatically enrolled.

๐Ÿ… Staying Active, Having Fun, and Making Connections!

What a fantastic celebration of Seniors Sports Week! ๐Ÿ’™

Sport Calgary, Silvera, and Unison at Kerby Centre joined forces to bring older adults together for a fun-filled event where participants had the opportunity to explore a variety of sports, including ping pong, fencing, pickleball, basketball, football, golf, darts, and Tai Chi!

๐ŸŽค Meet Dell! She shares her experience participating in the activities and reminds us that staying active is also about trying new things, having fun, and connecting with others.

A big thank you to Sport Calgary and Silvera for partnering with us to make this event possible, and to everyone who came out and participated! ๐Ÿงก

Together, we're creating more opportunities for older adults to stay active, connected, and engaged in our community.

When a parent moves into long-term care, does the responsibility of caregiving end? For Robin Jones, the answer is no.

Robin works in Seattle, while his mother, Sandra lives in a Calgary care facility. Sandra is an award-winning writer and former English teacher whose creative life included work at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. As dementia has gradually taken away her independence, Robin and his brother have continued paying for additional private home care to help support her.

The extra care provides companionship and gives Robin a better understanding of how his mother is doing, even when he is hundreds of kilometres away. It also offers an additional layer of advocacy, helping the family identify concerns and raise questions about her care.

This Unison TV story explores dementia and the difficult decisions involved in caring for an aging parent and the financial considerations families face.

Whether you can get certain vaccines for free depends on where you live in Canada.
As Canadians age, vaccines can play an important role in preventing serious illness and hospitalization. But access to publicly funded vaccines varies from province to province.

Siobhan Grennan, Director of Educational Partnerships with the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP), explains why the organization is calling for publicly funded access to vaccines recommended by NACI
