20 newcomers. One new pathway into Alberta’s skilled trades.

We’re excited to welcome 20 participants to the second cohort of the Trades Ready Training (TRT) Program, which officially began on August 31.

Delivered in partnership with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (UPAT DC17), the program connects newcomers with hands-on training, industry recognized certifications, employability skills, and direct connections to employers.

Through TRT, participants are building the skills and industry knowledge they need to pursue meaningful careers in Alberta’s construction sector.

Strong partnerships create stronger pathways to employment, and we’re proud to work alongside industry partners to help newcomers build their careers and contribute to Alberta’s workforce.

Newcomer women in Edmonton, I-WIN is back this September.

The Immigrant Women’s Integration Network (I-WIN) is welcoming both new and returning participants this fall through weekly drop-in sessions and a new certificate program.

Weekly I-WIN Drop-In Sessions
Starting Thursday, September 3
1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Every Thursday
These sessions are a welcoming space for newcomer women to connect with others, discover community resources, build confidence, and learn practical skills that support life in Canada.

7-Week Certificate Program
Starting Monday, September 14
1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Through the 7-week program, newcomer women can:
• Build connections, friendships and a sense of belonging
• Learn about Canadian and Indigenous cultures
• Develop confidence and practical life skills
• Explore employment readiness and community resources
• Strengthen self-advocacy and self-care skills
• Connect with other newcomer women in a welcoming and supportive environment

Learning the Basics of Camping in Canada

Last month, Immigrant Women’s Integration Network (I-WIN) participants joined Parks Canada for a hands-on Learn to Camp 101 session.

Participants learned how to set up and take down a tent, explored essential camping gear, and picked up important bear safety tips. They also had the opportunity to practice their skills, ask questions, share experiences, and connect with one another outdoors.

A big thank you to Racheal and Silayan from Parks Canada for making the session welcoming, practical, and fun. We appreciate you helping newcomers feel more confident exploring Canada’s outdoors.

We’re excited to see participants put these new skills to use as they continue exploring more outdoor adventures ahead!

From uncertainty to becoming a proud Canadian citizen.

In 2018, Rhona Malhari came to the Newcomer Centre during one of the most difficult moments of her life. Her permanent residency application had been refused, she was in Canada as a visitor with her one-year-old child, and she was facing the possibility of returning to the Philippines.

With support from HARI RIJAL, our Settlement Counsellor, Rhona explored her options, gathered the required documents, and submitted an application for permanent residence on Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds.

Seven months after submitting additional documents, Rhona received the news she had been hoping for. Her permanent residency was approved.

But Rhona’s journey did not stop there.

Over the years, she gained confidence, learned new technology skills, and continued working toward her next goal, becoming a Canadian citizen.

In September 2025, Rhona applied for citizenship with only minimal support. And when she needed guidance again, Hari was there to support her through this next chapter too.

Then, last week, Rhona called with the news we had been waiting to hear.

Rhona had taken her Canadian citizenship oath.

Her journey is a powerful reminder of what accessible settlement services can make possible. It also shows the impact of having someone who can walk alongside you through some of life’s most uncertain moments.

Today, Rhona is waiting for her Canadian passport, excited about returning to the Philippines one day, this time as a proud Canadian citizen.

Her message to the Newcomer Centre was simple:

“God bless you, Newcomer Centre.”

A heartfelt thank you to Hari Prasad Rijal for supporting Rhona through both important milestones in her journey, from her permanent residency application in 2018 to her citizenship journey years later.

And congratulations, Rhona. We are honoured to have been part of your story and incredibly proud of how far you have come.

The Newcomer Centre is looking for an Essential Skills Facilitator to join our team in Edmonton.

This full-time, fixed-term role supports adult learners and newcomers in building essential skills for employment, community participation, and everyday life in Canada.

What you’ll bring:
• Adult education and/or ESL education credentials
• 2+ years of relevant facilitation, employment, workforce development, settlement, or training experience
• Strong facilitation, coaching, and intercultural communication skills
• A learner-centred approach and commitment to inclusion

Position: Full-time, Fixed-term until March 31, 2027
Location: Edmonton, Hybrid

On August 19, we had the pleasure of joining Francophonie Canadienne Plurielle - FRAP for its Newcomer Orientation Day and connecting with families from Edmonton’s Francophone community.

Thank you to FRAP for giving the Newcomer Centre the opportunity to present our programs and services in French and share resources that can provide additional support to newcomer youth and families.

A special thank you to Christophe Danumah, Manager, Workforce Development and Partnerships, for presenting our programs and services, and to Eni, Melissa M., Mikayla and Jawad for supporting families at our booth and answering questions.

We truly appreciated the warm welcome and the opportunity to connect, listen, and share information with the community.
